What do you guys know about preamp stage biasing, hot and cold?
All examples below are with a 100K plate load.
1.5K is pretty neutral and will give you the most head room on that stage.
A higher resistance give your a colder harsher clipping distortion
a lower Resistance gives you a warmer Softer clipping more compressed distortion.
Soldano's and Early Recto's 1.8K, 1.8K 39K 1.8K
A JCM800 2.7K, 10K, 470Ω 820Ω in their preamp.
I believe bias has a lot to do with the texture of the distortion and feel.
