Have you tweaked the push button level control on the back of the SYN-1? I find in high it produces a lot of output, you might try the low setting to make it more manageable.

The built in clean channel is supposed to be a high headroom clean channel, hence no need for a master volume, like blackface Fender amps. The modules all have master volumes built into them, so another master would be redundant in my opinion.
