That connections allows you to use the Amp's own preamp channels when the SYN2 is on bypass, this is the whole purpose of this setup. I don't know the ENGL head but I would guess you wouldn't need t engage the preamp defeat, you'd only need to engage the FX loop (if it's switchable)...

Dave Friedman has a show on you tube, he's stated more than once that EL34's are not reliable, and in one particular episode with Mike Soldano they both agreed on this. I guess he pushed for the SYN5050 to be 6L6 because of this.

I have a SYN2 and no Synergy modules, haven't found any issue. The only difference is that the SYN2 makes the mods sound a bit brighter.

What circuit is the Synergy hardware (rack or amp) using if you don't use Synergy modules? Is there a default setting that the hardware uses if no Synergy modules is used? Does the last Synergy module used in a particular hardware sets the input circuit for all future non-Synergy mods to use...

I just did what you're doing as a test a couple days ago. If you're using MIDI presets 1-4 for the 4 channels in the SYN2, then the unit is not in bypass, therefore you shouldn't be hearing the RM4 at the same time. When the SYN2 is not in bypass so you shouldn't be hearing the RM4 at all. The...

I have both units in a SKB 4 space rack along with an FX unit. I've always thought the rack power amps need at least 1 free slot above them for ventilation. The high speed fan of the SYN5050 turns on quite a bit so it's obvious that the unit gets hot.

The mods I have sound brighter through the SYN2 than in either an RM4 or M4, could be due to the V1 tube, though I haven't done some tube swap yet. A few mods benefit from the brighter tone, others don't, most don't care. I think the mods sound equally good in either. I don't have any Synergy...
