Some amps let you mute the signal to one side of the push pull giving a quozi SE power section. Your 12DW7 probably somewhat doing this, and in my opinion i love SE amps.

You have to rebias when you disconnect two of the tubes. Bias voltage is affected when you turn off or take out two power tubes. I usually run two el34 and 2 6l6's. very warm full tone.

Do the tone controls effect the tone much or do they have a subtle effect? I actually think I like the mts clips of the mark x Vs the real amp.

I've found with an emg 81 i have to crank the mids a lot more than with even the emg h4, and start with the bass and gain at noon or less.
