I just got a RM100KH without modules so I need to fill it up. I play metal: mainly Metallica and thrash metal, some power metal and shred, and also other Maiden, King Diamond, and some heavy detuned stuff. I want some versatility, but I want a crushing rhythm and lead tone as well as a nice clean. I gave some options in the poll, but feel free to recommend any :)
Right now I'm liking the KH-1, 1086, and KH-3 combo. Eventually I'll want some extras too so I end up having 5 or so different modules.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi, MorgMetal666, for thrash metal, I'd go with a Blackface, Plexi, and Ultra. Well, that's what I'm using now anyway, hahahaha. Most of the older metal stuff used Marshalls, as they were the highest gain amps at the time :p . The signature modules will probably get you a more super high gain, modern metal sound.

Well I like newer metal too (because of guitars not the singing 8)) so I'd like something great for lead, a heavy newer rhythm, and an old-school crunch as well as a clean like Metallica's. I've played the KH-1 and I like it as well as the KH-3. I also liked the ultra. I hear the 1086 is very versatile so I want it for all kinds of rhythm tones.

you would probably be happy with a 1086, its super heavy and very versatile

You'll get a lot eventually- so I say start off the baseline and grab the whole kh series to match your head. You love Metallica and play that genre so enjoy yourself. As you add modules, you may choose to let 1 go, but if you don't hear it, you'll always wonder "Does that KH1 really play a loud clean? KH2 sound old school? KH3 rule the modern world?"

This is a lock if you play a similar guitar, i.e emg actives

Good luck!

You know the KH-3 will deliver some crushing rhythm and great leads. I'm a huge fan of this module and I think it owns the KH-2...although the KH-2 does some killer early Metallica tones.

Maiden (and a lot of metal/thrash bands) use DSLs and the like....the 1086 might cover it...

Although I'm not a huge fan of the 1086, if you can score a good used deal..I say you have to try it....with the two gain modes it might cover a lot of your ground. I was never a fan of the mid-scooped voicing position but you might like it...but the other voicing position sounded decent.

The plexi module should give some vintage metal sounds, which is what I'd like to have as a channel. Does the KH-2 do vintage tones well? It is supposed to be Kirk's classic vintage tone like on Kill 'em All and other 80's thrash bands like Testament or Megadeth had a similar sound so it could theoretically get those.

So my status as of now is Kh-1, KH-3, and either plexi or KH-2 and 1086.

Thanks again guys

The Plexi cranked is one loud SOB but not sure it'll have the gain and distortion you want without a pedal....I'll take someones second opinion on that since I've always gone with higher gain modules...but am fairly sure.

I should've cranked the Brahma for you while you were here to compare it to the KH-2 but the KH-2 is more compressed and scooped sounding than a Plexi/Brahma...I think the KH-2 with gain at about 10-10:30 o'clock is comparable to the Plexi on full :D

Alright, I'm going for all three KH modules plus a 1086 unless I try something else I like a lot.
