A guitar question: Most of the players I know run their guitar volume all the way up (to 11) most of the time. Some guys leave it up ALL the time and use pedals, boosters, etc. to change levels. But I've discovered that if I run my guitar into my RM4 at around 50%, then turn the module inputs up to around 50%, that I can find the tone I'm looking for AND control dynamics much more effectively.

Any thoughts on that?

I think it's all dependent on the genre/style you're going for...here at MTS forum, I imagine many hi-gain heads keep the guitar volume maxed out. You're right though, for mid gain tones the guitar volume (& tone) is often overlooked

I think using the guitar volume control is an old and lost art/tonal method. What you're doing is making your setup and tones more versatile without changing any of the pieces. I think it's a great idea.

I wouldn't be able to do this with my strat because I constantly bump the volume control and it's much easier to spin it to full volume, rather than a more precise mid-volume setting.

I usually run my guitar volume wide open. But more and more I find myself fiddling with the volume knob to adjust the amount of gain. Sometimes a module will feel "too much" for a particular section of a song and backing off the guitar vol. will be just the adjustment needed. I'm sure my bandmates are completely unaware of any subtle changes it makes though ;)

It is definately a lost art. I don't do it much anymore. I tend to use a volume pedal with a minimum volume setting, to clean up a module (preamp). Most of the guys I see doing it these days are in the blues genre.

Another technique you don't hear much about is picking attack. Picking lighter to get a less overdriven or "softer" sound or beat the hell out of the strings to get some hard edged tone.

You should change the value of the pots so you can run them wide open like the rest of us!
