Yes, you wouldn't think it, but I like a wide range of tones beyond metal.

What setup would be appropriate for a Garcia Dead type tone? I don't even know what they plugged into.....I was never an avid fan, but I do enjoy their stuff.

Gibson Les Paul is probably too thick, maybe Strat too is too thin, so that's a big component. But I have a good supply of modules to play with, perhaps the JTM set cleaner? Tweed?

What type power tube?

I'm sure there a Dead fanatic here somewhere that can steer me right

KH-1 or Blackface + stratocaster will get you there. 6L6 or something with a ton of headroom. He used a Twin Reverb preamp section going to a McIntosh 2300 power amp running bridged mono.

Garcia's Effects:
MXR Distortion + Script Logo for leads and gain.
MXR Analog Delay- the green one with 3 knobs.
MXR Phase 100 Script logo -( think candyman lead)
Mutron lll envelope filter- there is no other like it.
Mutron Octave Divider

So he's running through a very clean amp with pedals.

You could probably get by with the Blackface (gain set around 9:00) and run either 6L6GC or 6550s.
