I am looking for a good heavy module with a british flavor. I have a Recto which sounds OK, is better boosted, but overall it isn't my thing. I also have an Ultra lead which I am not too happy with either. I am running them in an RM100, and I have tried 6L6s, and EL34s. Next week I am getting an Egnater M4 with single channel mods (two bassmans, one twin, and a JTM45). That should cover me for clean, blues, and crunch, but I am wanting a high gain module that is tight, and can get a bit percussive in the bass, but not boomy. Can you recomend me some modules??

This is the definition of the SL+ module. It's a JCM800 in a box (if you buy the new ones or mod an old one). It's tight, punchy, with a somewhat dry gain until you get it dimed.

Can someone explain the tones of the 1086 vs XTC vs SL+ for me?? I have it narrowed down to one of those.

Thanks

Well, I own both, love them both. If I had to pick between them I'd go with the 1086, it is more versatile on the range of tones. It is my favorite module out of 8 that I currently own, which was a total surprise to me (I'm not a huge Disturbed fan- sure they are a good band, but before I got the module I didn't even know who Dan Donegan was, it wasn't like I was hunting for his tone.)

The gain boost is a substantial- with it in the minus position, you can go through a wide range from dirty bluesy tone to AC/DC style classic rock, with very precise control over the gain. Dare I call it "subtle??" I'm able to dial it in pretty close to my Brahma module's mid gain tone, although the Brahma wins for being more harmonically rich. That might be as much due to the difference in preamp tubes though, I haven't experimented with changing them around yet. (see my post on a proposed sticky on tube recommendations elsewhere in the Modules section for more on that...)

Turn it to plus on the gain switch and cut back the mids, and it jacks it into metal territory, again with pretty gradual increase from chugga-chugga rhythm all the way to over the top metal past Disturbed into thrash tones. (You'll probably need a noise gate to be able to control it above about 7 on the gain with it in plus mode). The mid switch is a noticeable difference in emphasis - helps add or remove that "nu metal" scooped sound, but overall the difference is not quite as pronounced as the gain boost.

If didn't own the 1086, I'd probably love the XTC more. It is a great module too, fairly versatile. I've never played a real Bogner to compare how close the modeling is, it just sounds great. At lower gain with mid pushed up to about 7 or 8 I can get a nice classic Sabbath early 70's rhythm tone with my SG, and a great metal tone at the high gain settings. It gets a decent 80's Metallica sound (and I also own a KH3, it compares pretty well to it.) I'm falling short on the flowery adjectives here - bottom line is I like them both, but if pressed I'd go with the 1086 for the broad range of sounds.
