Is there a difference in tone when using the same modules and cabs with a Randall MTS head vs the Preamp/Poweramp combo ?

Ofcourse the RM4 allows 4 preamps and the poweramp can push a stereo cab, just wanted to know if the different cicuitry affects the tone and which is better.

Thanks

I like the RT2/50 because i can go through EL34's or 6L6's and program it according to each module. With any MTS head you can only get one power tube sound from it at a time. You can mix and match tubes but you can't switch on the fly like the RT2/50. And it's rack mountable. Other than that i'd say the differences are few and less than remarkable.

Peace, Joshua

For a recording rig, you gotta do the RM4 RT2/50 route for quick flexibility and two different tones per module...At least that's my opinion if you don't mind swapping tubes here and there an RM100 would treat you great too! The key is picking the right modules for what you need...Lotsa great trading and selling around here so it's not hard to come by good stuff...And you can always sell it if you don't like it right here as well...We all do the MTS module dance here...

Heads and preamp/poweramp setups always have a bit of a difference because the preamp and poweramp don't share the same power transformer like in a head. I don't think one sounds better than the other, it's a personal preference. I tend to like a preamp/poweramp setup most of the time and I swear by the RT/250. That being said, there is a certain "mojo" that you get out of a head that I've never got out of a preamp/.poweramp rig.

That mojo might be exactly what you pointed out: pre and power sections using the same power transformer.

I've heard some people say that the rack combo is a bit more punchy..
I can't really comment on that since I've only heard the rack so far (without the RT2/50 untill next week ;) )

I own both..and I tested both extensively at Auburn Music in Longview,Texas.
It was an Rm100 versus and Rm4 and a 2x12 sealed cab with Celestion seventy eighties in it (yuck, imho).

The Rm4 was obviously more flexible..and the even with the lousy speakers in that cab...
the Rm4 had more low end. And it was tighter.
I dig being able to change my power amp tubes from el34 to 6l6s etc..that what the REAL amps use..or maybe kt88s...the point is..if you are trying to get THAT tone use what they used..right down to the power tubes.
I like it, works for me.
And an rm50 is STILL a great grab and go amp. Until,of course, Randall makes my 3 module combo Ive been asking for.
