I have been looking into mod options for 5150 tones, and by all accounts the Salvation S1S0 and JF PV VIL are both great, I read a few comments on a couple of older youtube vids stating that the Ultra and Ultra XL were based on the 5150, anyone know if this is true? I had thought them to be based more on Randall's own high-gain amps, maybe T2, V2?

The Ultra and Ultra XL are 5150-ish, but certainly aren't duplicates of those amps. They're heavy, heavy modules though; the Ultra XL has always been one of my favorites man, it's worth a try.

I've had a V2 in the past and almost every variety of the 5150 series amps (II, 6505,6505+), and the Ultra XL is different, but similar if that makes sense. It still a high gain monster through and through but it has its own thing going on. It's really bite-y and tight, which I love.

Give it a go!

I had both the stock ultra and the ultraxl and they were different.....My first thought in the ultra was that it did remind me alot of a 5150,where the xl just had it's own vibe....

I know many of you don't rate the stock ULTRA module very highly. But I like its warm sustain.

I'm playing humbuckers through it, I don't use any pedals in front of it and I'm driving a Mesa Boogie Stereo 20/20. Occasionally, I'll include some DigiTech GSP-2101 effects in my RM4's effects loop and the ULTRA seems to take effects well.

I really appreciate the info, I had heard different opinions of the stock ultra, but from clips and descriptions I couldnt help but be interested in it, I think I will definitely get one and give it a try! Thanks guys!

Ultra owner here. Would I be wrong to say it's based on the Peavey Ultra? The custom mods you mentioned nail the 5150 sound.

Get your Ultra sent to Jaded Faith for his very reasonably priced upgrade and don't look back. I've had mine for 2 years and it kills! I've had 5150 owners congratulate me on how good it is. Go for it!

Will do! I always forget about the Peavey Ultra, which was a killer amp. I should've thought about that since I have a Triple X, which was based on the Ultra Tube. In fact the XXX says Ultra Tube Series Amplifier right on the front panel. Both of these amps were designed by James Brown, who of course also designed the 5150 so it makes sense that they all have similar sounds. I didn't know at the time I aquired my XXX that it was originally designed by James with George Lynch to be the George Lynch Triple XXX, I ended up with two Lynch signature amps! I'm on that Ultra module regardless of what it was based on, it sure seems exactly my type of sound!

PS This is just to clarify my previous post. I had Rob / Jaded Faith do his warmth/clarity upgrade along with having a mid cut/boost switch and a Ultra/Ultra XL switch. The end result is nothing short of excellent.
I'm sure his new PV VIL mod is great too.

Well gents, I just picked me up a gigmods ultra with xl switch/mode from fuzzboat in the classifieds, can't wait to get it into my Lynchbox and give 'er a go!

^I have MMans in my EpiLP 7string
totally awesome, monstrous upgrade over stock Epi pickups- which i didn't hate for heavy rhythms, but clean dirty and bridge lead tones sucked. The BKs make this guitar a beautiful axe

I'm looking at getting a set for my Gibson LP. Close consideration into the Painkillers, with Ceramic bridge option. the eq curve is similar to the MMans, but the eq on the neck has more mids, which I think I would like. Tim at BK is super helpful if you have questions
