never hear anything about the ultra xl, anyone using? how do the ultra and ultra xl differ. is xl as scooped as the regular one? just looking to find out some info on it. clips of xl's and regular ultra would be great. i 've had the silverface ultra before, not to blown away by it, thinking of getting one modded to an xl would be cool if there is a noticble difference for the better

The Ultra XL is my personal favorite. IMHO it's the closeest to the 5150 of all of the modules. I think it has more mids than a regular Ultra and lots of gain w/o being to fuzzed out. Right now it's the choice of our AR guy and every band who has played it, loves it.

I did a switch mod from Ultra to XL finally (had some down time while waitng for parts) and it sounds really good. The Ultra sounds thinner by comparison, XL has more mids (not annoyingly so though) and just sounds bigger and bolder.

I could see where an Ultra could come in handy, but if I had to choose one over the other, I'd go XL personally. It's nice to be able to go back and forth though.

that's cool on the 5150, i always thought my old silverfaceed ultra sounded alot like one. just got another older one to have modded , hopefully it gets real close as i think that the 5150 has killer tone for metal although it can be kind of dry. i think a brown module and an ultra mixed together somehow could get a 5150 down pretty good.

Kinda like the JCM800 mod is it?

Got a price on that mod? I'd like the switch installed to go Ultra/XL....not fussed about the 'tight' switch or caps....since I always run 0.001 on the Ultra :D

It's kinda like the JCM800 in that it changes the tone stack, just not the same values. I do it for the same as that mod - $69, includes a switch. If you want a swapped out faceplate (otherwise it's going to be fugly) $84. I have two pretty cool looking ultra faceplates being done right now... one is pretty metal looking and I did it custom for a guy, another is a checkerboard that I dig (huge cheap trick fan here). :)

Got any pics of the new faceplates yet?

here are a few computer roughs... I should have the 'real ones' in hand early next week. The checkerboard is for me... I also did a brushed silver with black etching rectifier faceplate for myself (since I traded off my prototype to ya) and also the Ultra below, that a guy sent me the font for and we tweaked it to where he wanted it. Pretty cool looking imho.

I really dig the look of that bottom faceplate. Pretty curious about the 'SHIFT' thing. Is that just a mid-voicing thing or something completely different?

How much to do a bass switch+Ultra/XL switch+that black faceplate?

Yeah, he wanted me to revoice it a little... kinda like an XL - shift the tonal center up a bit. We thought 'shift' would be a good control name. :)

You'd be looking at $149 for the whole shebang. It's a lot like the SL+, just different values for the components.

Can't believe you guys don't dig the checkerboard... I have a feeling the 'real' one is going to look really cool. Of course, I'll need to get a Hamer standard if I do... :)

don't forget the matching shoes and 5-neck guitar

The checker board is cool, just not my thing. I think it'd be funny if you did a Mr.Scary faceplate with kittens and puppies. Or maybe flowers and butterflies.

That's a great idea, Pete. It'll go over real well in Chinatown
:D It'll be the official module for the next Go Gos/Bangles reunion tour
