i am on a mod expansion spree and looking for one more gain-y dual channel mod to round it out. i have the VX, Bman, COD and SL2. I want something that will be like a high-gain COD - rich in mids, but tighter in the lows, and more aggressive.

are the EG3/4 or EG5 it? maybe the EG3/4x?

thanks for the suggestion, but as i understand it, since i want a dual channel mod (i have a mod 50 and don't want to give up that flexibility), i'd have to get a dual mod and then send it in for the mark X, which sounds pricey... was hoping to go with a stock dualie.

Gotcha, modded route is a bit more but totally worth it IMO. Robs (jaded faith) mods for duals are close if not the same $ as singles I believe. He's also right here in the good old USA

I've had 2 EG5s and tried to like them but didn't; too compressed and thin with a harsh treble. The EG3/4 was my main high gainer for years and I preferred it to the SL2 and SL2X and it went well with the B'man.

I recently sent my EG3/4 to be converted into a dual Quick Mod by Jaded Faith Mods and it's pretty sick; much thicker than the other Marshall based mods with a certain weight behind individual notes, tight enough but loose enough to be great for leads too. This one is very different feeling than just about everything else I've tried and I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it; it tends to make other modules sound thin and it takes some work to dial it in at different volumes (going from bedroom to loud band volume).

If I were you I would send your COD to Rob to be converted into a dual OverDrive Special (although that's not what your asking for it would just be cool).

I've got a EG3/4 and a SLx2 and I sent the EG3/4 to Rob to base mod - it's now so good that I'm thinking about getting the SLx2 modded to something else and out the box its great. Honestly I know it's a bit more $ but get the EG3/4 and get it base modded you will never need another hot rodded Marshall type tone

+ 1 on this, I love the EG5 on it's own but I can't quite get it to work in a group setting. Its to raspy and aggressive in the same way my Boogie Mark III is! Great on it's own, rubbish in the mix!

If you have a look here http://mtsforum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?t=16905 there is a bit more on SLO / Marshall modules that might help!

Just to throw a little contrast into the discussion - I ordered an EG3/4 earlier this year (the newer ones with the D/S switch and mid-shift) expecting to really love it. I cannot honestly say that I do. For me, it's just a bit too dark, a bit too loose, and doesn't have quite as much gain as I had hoped. I just can't get it to sit well with the rest of my mods. Switching the power section form 6550s to EL34s helped a bit, but still...not quite what I want it to be. So now I'm debating what to get it modded into...anyway just thought I'd throw that out there.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I found this kind of surprising...I find the Mark III excellent at cutting through a mix. I've been working on mixing some songs that I've been recording over the past few years. On some of them I used a Mesa Studio Preamp into the power section of a Mark III blue stripe, and on some I just used the Mark III as is. The guitar sounds absolutely ripping on the tracks where I just used the Mark III. I don't have that amp anymore, but I have a different Mark III that I like even better. Weird how that works out. You don't scoop the mids with the GEQ do you?

Hey - mine is a red stripe and no, no real scooping of the mids. I was meaning in a band situation rather than recording - I've not actually recorded with this amp in fact.

Could be I just don't see eye to eye with the Mark III, but I don't have the same issue with my Mark II's, but to cut through the mix live I seem to end up sounds to trebley and not in a good way?

I've got a studio preamp too and I don't find that has the same issue, but then again it's the same preamp circuit as the Mark II's (or so I'm told).

Hmm, we have kind of hijacked this thread - sorry :)

Thanks for this post- I've been looking for a "comparison" type of statement for the Quickmod vs other Marshall type mods. Sounds like a cool mod and different enougt to add to my collection. Sucks what Im hearing about the EG5 though- Ive always thought it was Egnater's take on a Soldano- But this is like the third time I've heard the "thin" and "trebly" statements when discussing this one....

Just a thought, I got Rob to base mod my Eg3/4 and I think its fantastic! Might be worth a shot, sure if you wanted Rob could tighten it up and add some gain.

Of course you could just mod it :)

Yeah I'm probably going to go the fully modded route...trouble is, there are more mods that I want than donors available!

Yup hear that dude :)

so i went with the EG3/4X... it's really everything i hoped it would be, especially since it's one of the new ones with the voicing button. i was worried that i might not like the "bright" mod of the X, but so far it seems perfect in my setup. regardless, bruce and terri sent a little baggy with the stock part and instructions on how to reverse the X mod back to stock just in case!

Nice one - I really like my EG3/4 as well. I know it can be pretty "dark", but hey what's wrong with that - good stuff :)
