that in between emg tone would be called emg-hz. the ones that came in my schecter weren't at all bad considering i've gotten these in other guitars and they sucked big time. in all honesty the bridge one sounded pretty similar to the 81-7 i replaced it with and had about the same gain, the passive one was bassier and not quite as crunchy, but emg does make passive pick up for that " in between sound" you mentioned
