Is it a high whistle that's constantly in the background? I had that with my Marshall DSL & TSL and it was the transformer causing the tubes to squeal

I figured it out, it was a combo of me driving the ultra with a tubescreamer, the new custom pedal fixed that, also a small practice room, with EMG's. The 1086 is the quietest module i've ever had.

strange... is there a transformer in the pre amp too? i wonder what would cause it to squeal.

Do you guys' ultras squeal when you dime the gain and turn the amp up but have no input (no guitar plugged in) or is mine defective?

I don't have this issue with my ultra XL, its now my favorite in my rack thus far (at first didn't love it)

It has plenty of gain, my gain knob is a little past noon. Sounds like something is amiss, most likely tubes as others have stated.

I get a minor squeal (very high pitched) from one of my modules when it's not pushed all the way in, seated correctly and screwed into the slot.

Out of control feedback and squealing usually = either microphonic preamp tube or pickup though. In your case it can't be the latter if nothing is plugged in :D
