I don't think that my MOD100 is going anywhere anytime soon but I have been thinking of trying out a MOD50.

Has anyone done a head to head with these two? Have you noticed any tonal differences? There have also been a lot of new MOD50 owners popping up, but not much mention of new MOD100s. Is there something that people are preferring in the MOD50?

MOD100 doesn't offer a low power feature but it seems to me that the channel vol on the modules works so well that I'm not so sure that a low power mode is strictly necessary. Each amp has its's own distinct advantages over the other.

Having two MODs would be a delightful exercise in decadence and perhaps a bit obsessive , but if there isn't enough tonal difference between the two then my hard earned dough would be better off spent completing my module collection!

I think its a number of things. For most people:

50 Watts is plenty enough power for most gigs
4 Channels at one time is more than enough for most gigs
The low power switch is nice for when you want a more squishy feel
The MOD100 is a LONG head. MOD 50 is smaller and easier to transport

Honestly, I can only see you needing the MOD100 if you want the most headroom and volume possible and/or you need 6 channels at your disposal at any given time.

I've got the MOD100 as well and I have compared it to the MOD50. The volume difference is negligible. Headroom is less on the 50 and a slightly more compressed sound earlier in the volume range. Both heads sound great, but I'll keep my Mod100. I like having the extra channels. I always grew up playing 50 watt marshalls, but I really like the extra headroom of the 100 watt power section. I would love to have a mod50 in addition to the 100, but I think I'll finish my module collection first. Besides, If I want a lower output and less headroom, I can pull 2 tubes or run the EL84s with adapters or 6V6 tubes.

BTW, Ibelieve the MOD 100 is not really available anymore except by request. Not too many people ordering them.

Comparing the 2:

100
More headroom
A little more volume
extra channels
Heavier

50
A little lighter
Smaller box
half power switch (18 watts)
less channels

There's one other crucial factor....$$$$.

MOD 100 loaded with modules is $2,995
MOD 50 loaded with modules is $1,995

Thanks for the replies, I honestly didn't think that there would be much difference between the two tone-wise, if anything at all.

Michael.
