The MTS line, OTOH, is solely variations on known circuits... no actual emulation in the modeling sense. A module can be wired to match, say, a Plexi preamp section. However, it cannot replicate how that Plexi preamp circuit co-operates with the missing pieces from the Plexi head (transformer, amp circuit, etc). OTOH, take a MosValve amplifier; THAT is modeling, to an extent. It is a solid state "emulation" of a tube power amp. MTS is modular, not modeling. To refer to the MTS as such (modeling preamp) is at best misleading, and at worst... well....Mattfig said:nikki-k said:Okay... so following this line of reasoning, the Friedman "Marsha" and the MetroAmp kits are... modeling?
Can't speak to the Marsha as I'm not that familiar with them...But if it's a modded Marshall, it's not modeling in my eyes...Just modded...If the MetroAmp kits are DIY amps and clones of others - than I would call them duplicates or replicates...
I only call MTS modeling because there are adjustments made to the circuits to make each module respond more like the original...I'll use the Recto tones as an example...They're modeling the tone of a Mesa Recto but are not duplicating or recreating the same circuit, especially when it comes to the power tube section- I guess any time you are approximating the tone- you're modeling by my definition...It's either modded, copied, or modeled...
I know we all hate that "modeling" word...But MTS is a tube modeling system...Vastly different than digital modeling and much closer due to more authentic parts rather than algorithms...
Just my .02...I guess it's just a matter of semantics...I love my MTS and consider it to be the best amp system out there...Throwing in the term modeling doesn't make it any less to me...
Bruce Egnater created the modular line so as to allow replacement/substitution option for a guitar amplifier circuit. Simply, the ability to utilize more than one preamp circuit with an amplifier, and to allow *live* switching between multiple preamp circuits. The fact that modules exist that either claim to or are made to emulate the sound/circuitry utilized by well-known (and often well-loved) amplifier makers is a side effect of capability.
Fair enough....I guess in the end, I don't care what anyone calls it...MTS is killer...
