So. I bought a Randall RM100M back in the middle of May with my tax return money. I was very very happy about the purchase and couldn't wait to get the amp. (I bought it from a music store in MN)

So, I get the amp and have a problem right away. It wouldn't go past a bedroom level volume. It wouldn't crank at all. A Peavey 6505+ was out doing it at 3 when my Randall was all the way up. So, I send it off. It comes back to me, and I have the same issue. The exact same issue. So, this time I send back the only module I have (Ultra XL) with the head. I get the head back and I read the repair statement. It says nothing wrong with the head, but the mod had a busted pot. The gain pot. So they replaced it.

So, assured nothing could go wrong this time, I plug in the amp. I set my EQ, turn the amp on, turn it off standby and go to turn up the master volume, finally waiting to see if my problem will be fixed. As soon as I move the knob a loud pop and flash is heard from the back of my amp. So I freak and turn it off. I had time to look at the tubes and noticed nothing strange about them. They looked fine, but I didn't check the tube failure light right then. After a moment of panic and ... disbelief I turn the amp back on. I take it off stand by and turn up the master again. No volume at all ... nothing. I check the back, no tube failure lights or anything.

... so ... would the gain pot really have been the issue with my volume? That can't be right. There is just no way! Also, any idea what could possibly be wrong with my head?!

I mean, I am just ... I don't know what to do anymore. I spent $1200 bucks on a RM100 and an Ultra XL mod that I've had for over a month, and haven't been able to use. The head has spent more time at Randall than with me. Does anyone know something that could be causing the issue? Does anyone know someone that works for US Music Corp that could help me. I don't want this thing "fixed" again. I need help though, and I don't know where else to turn. If anyone has anything at all, please let me know. I'll be forever grateful.

A pop and flash sounds like a blown cap. Check the filter caps in the amp (by taking it very carefully out of the chassis). I've got mine out right now (trying a new fan that won't work) and they're very accessible. Just be REALLYSUPERFVCKINCAREFUL since they carry dangerous current.

I would definitely contact wherever you bought it from, explain the situation and see if you can do a return/exchange for a new model. Depending on where you bought it, some places are very easy going and will let you exchange it for a new one since this one has already been repaired twice and is still having major issues.

That's why it's called a gain pot. If any gain stage in the chain is broken you get........no gain; i.e. volume. It sounds like it got a good wack in shipping back to you.
