I'm looking at buying an RM4 soon, but I don't know what modules I want. I'm looking for all 4 to be high gain sounds (already have a clean amp). The 4 tones I'm looking for are:

1)Modern high gain rhythm - preferably like a tighter Dual Rectifier sound
2)Modern high gain lead - Trivium, BLS, newer Megadeth, Pantera
3)80's metal lead - Ratt, Scorpions, Dio, etc.
4)Rhythm tone similar to Master of Puppets album

I'm thinking the KH2 should be perfect for the 4th tone, but I don't know about the other 3. The power amp is 6L6 based, so I know it won't be perfect for the 80's lead, but I'd like to get something close. I don't mind using a boost if necessary. I'm also fairly handy with a soldering iron, so if a module needs a little modifying, I can probably handle that. Help a brotha out!

1)Modern high gain rhythm - GRAIL
2)Modern high gain lead - KH3 or ULTRA XL
3)80's metal lead - MR SCARY
4)Rhythm tone similar to MOP KH2

Thats if you are talking stock .Okstrat and Dave friedman can do some great mods as well

I'm glad I asked. Other than the KH2, I was completely off. My guess just going by descriptions was

1)Ultra or 1086
2)XTC w/ a boost
3)SL+
4)KH2

Now for a little different question. How good do these things sound? I know that's obviously a subjective question, but if I get the RM4, it's going to basically be my only amp. I'm going to use the RM4 into the power amp of a Carvin X-100B, so technically I'll had another amp (but the gain on the X-100 sucks). Are the modules a real replacement for an amp in a live situation, or do people usually them for recording?

i'd go with what you had, i think you'll find the high gainers capable of more than what is described- a 1086 can do four tones easily and cover low to high gain very well and with a boost will be your most brutal, the ultra is also brutal and can do searing leads but can also sounds 80's and does decent pantera , mr. scary may be better for 80's than the sl+ but with jcm mod alot people love the sl and it does zack so. if you want mop tone you'll have to get the kh-2, but i think you were right but either way you can't go wrong. xtc is a good lead tone but boosted it is a decent rythym tone as well.

On review. I love the original setup I agreed with.
But you could get those tones alot easier.

1)Modern high gain rhythm - Ultra XL
2)Modern high gain lead - ULTRA XL
3)80's metal lead - MR SCARY
4)Rhythm tone similar to - KH2

I bought my setup as : Blackface (clean), SL+ (crunch), XTC (bogner) and Ultra XL (high gain).
But I've found that (I.M.O) the Ultra XL handles ALL high gain stuff AMAZINGLY !! The KH-2 does all 80's stuff beyond any doubt !!
The Mr. Scary is great of Doken-style leads, and SLO-100 ground.
The Grail is amazing if you REALLY want the Boogie sound, but I'm sure you'll fined the Ultra XL more than you'll ever need. NO ONE complains about it, EVER !!
