I had the EG5, the Ultra, the KH3, the KH 2, Treadplate, MHG, EG 3/4 list goes on and on......but for my ears nothing touches the Pete Modded 1086. Too bad most people dont seem to like it(????) But to me it covers ALOT of different metal tones and the modded one is so CLEAR(You know Petes work!!) that its just CRUSHING distortion.
Way better then the plain stock one. Everyone that has heard it is blown away and is wanting to buy a Randall RM100 just to get that modded 1086. But they have to sell their Mesa's first! :D
But tone is in the EARS OF THE LISTENER. Some people might think it sucks but I have played alot of amps and if your looking for tight metal.....this is it.

A thought just occurred to me....I've been disliking the 1086 a lot for a long time..but I play through the 50W head and they sound very different to the 100W head that I owned....

The RM100M always sounded like there was a 'sheen' on top of the tone..like it was too hi-fi or something...had the same issue with the RT2/50 :-/

The stock 1086 just sounds 'fake' to me..it was better with the Tung-Sol in .. gave it a bit more warmth maybe....

I'm sure Pete can work wonders but his best mods have pretty good sounding modules to start with..still makes me curious about the 1086 of course :D

Oh Yeah....Pete really brings LIFE and TONE to the 1086. The mid scoop channel still is "OK" but the main channel just crushes. I was very impressed when I played thru Petes 1086 and my band mates jaws hit the floor saying "What did you do to your amp?!?!" Its been a big success. But again.....tone is in the ears of who listens. I guess if you liked it stock you will love it modded. Not sure if you didnt care for it stock how your reaction will be to the modded one. It still sounds the same......but ALIVE and CLEAR and distortion is more Present, articulate and Dynamic. You hear all the mistakes on this one and cant hide behind alot of MUSHY distortion. I love it!! :D

JKD,i know what ya mean.there is a noticeable difference in the "tone" & "feel" between a RM50 & a RM100 amp,not alot,but it's definately there.must be in the output trannys,i'm guessing.imo,the RM50 sounds more open,warm and tubey...whereas the RM100 sounds a bit more processed,less open,sorta(dare i say)solid-stateish,and as you mentioned,more hi-fi than a RM50 head...i've played several different mts modules,through both the 50-watt & 100-watt heads,side by side,and in each and every case,i preferred the tone of the RM50...for the record,i didnt care for the 1086,in either amp...but "to each their own"! ...that's why we have "choices" :D

Ned is right, we basically all play the same amp with various differences(tubes, cabs, cords, pedals, etc....) just little differences but we can all get WAYYYY Different tones from this MTS amp. So unique and SOOOO VERSITALE that I will never go back to another amp. Its the complete machine that you can always "tweak" to your perfection. :D

This is the main thing about ANY modifications... for the most part, you have to at least kinda like the 'base' module to begin with, as my mods do two basic things:

1) ENHANCE what it does. More clarity, warmth, high end, etc.

2) OPTIONS to change the sound like different midrange shifts, ability to change the bass cap/low end response, switchable gains.

If you're a metal dood looking for ultimate shred tone, a 'clean' module isn't going to work for you no matter how it's modded unless the entire thing gets reworked. Ditto for someone who likes plexi-marshall tones and they buy an Ultra or Recto. You have to be in the ballpark to begin with. I don't like modding modules too far from their roots - because if that's the case, then just buy the 'roots' module to begin with.

Pete

+10 on what Pete just said...you really have to,at least, kinda like the "base" tone of a particular module.if you're not there, you never will be,regardless of any amount of mod work! mods ARE for enhancement and/or options...food for thought!

btw,guess i'm a metal dood,not a metal dude!

You bet!! Since I LOVED the 1086 as a "base" I knew when Pete modded it, it could only GET BETTER and thus I bought it and have been happier then a pig in mud!! Cant take a "clean " module and make it the METAL MASTER......and so on. if you like a certain module, JTM, Plexi etc.....send it out to Pete to make it ENHANCED.......you wont be sorry!!
Rock on Brothers............ 8)

Danno is out!
