played new Ultra XL for the first time-where is the gain ???

Ok. It sounds nice.
But I?m really missing that brutal-devildriver like thing. And where are the tons of gain ? -hm, maybe one tube isn?t working right...
I tried it with my RM 20, maybe it sounds better with my RM 100 ?

My 1666 sounds super-great in the RM20 with gain at noon. The UXL needs the gain at 3:00 and there is still something missing!


Is there anybody who had the same experience ?

I'd probably check the preamp tubes. The XL has TONS of gain on tap. It actually has more of that Mesa Boogie like heaviness than my Rectified module. It's probably one of the best stock high gain modules that I've found.

The KT88 in my RT2 pushes the UXL a bit harder but I have no problem with it in my RM20. Check the preamp tubes maybe they are dying on you. If they are not then an easy solution is to push the boost button on the RM20 :wink:

My Mr Scary felt like it has more gain when I was playing it in the RM100.
I?ve never heard, that a UXL needs to be boosted :lol:

Hey Sascha...the UXL is a monster, you should be happy with the gain once you sort the tubes out. So yeah, swap out the tubes and post what happens.

I actually had some sound quality issues with one of my modules and replaced the tubes and it was night and day. I recommend trying the same.

The UXL has sovteks in it, the 1666 EHs.

I changed the tubes and it sounds a little better with the EHs -gainier and more "sound". But still no gain-massaker :lol:

Don?t get me wrong, I think for example that the mr scary has enough gain, but for "THE" Randall highgain module, it is really not much.
It?s a nice, very definied sound and not really noisy at all.

Today I ordered 2x JJ ECC83S to give it a try.

What do you think ?

I have JJ's in mine and the output from that channel knocks over small children :lol: Check out some Shuguang Silver Dragons, too. You may also need to check all the connections. The gain pots can be kinda susceptible to flimsiness on them, so some connections there might not be as strong as they should be.

I will check the connections and give it another try with the JJs.
The Sovteks really don?t sound good in it.

I like the charakter of it. I feared it could sound a little like my old metal zone. :lol:

Want to kick up the gain with preamp tubes?

Tung Sol 12AX7 in the module V1 and a Chinese (Shuguang) Gen 8 or 9 ECC83 (high gain) in module V2.

I did that with my Brahma and it really gave it a kick. If that's not enough try two Shuguangs.

Can never have enough preamp tubes. I had 8 JJ ECC83's new. 1 sounded really good, 1 sounded good, the rest of them were whatever or sounded really old and weak and lacked gain.

Have had the same experience with EH as well.

I don't care for Groove Tubes but like this one a whole lot. Something you might like is the GT12ax7R3.

OK it sounds best with the JJs.
No gain overkill, but sounding real nice gain at 3 o?clock.
I?m not able now to play it with my RM 100, but I guess this will kick it a bit more with my 6L6 + E34Ls inside the poweramp.
I?ll let you know, but I?m on holidays for 2 weeks...

I've ran through every single stock Randall Module and the only two that have tons of gain are the Ultra and Ultra XL. I'm running JJ's in both and the RM100 with JJ 6L6. The Ultra XL is by for the best high gain mod they make. I posted on here a bunch of times early on about all the other modules just lacking in the gain department until I hit the UltraXL. You may just be used to the ripping custom modules! That is the road I am taking next since it looks like any new Randall modules are still a very long way out.

No, R/D Steve said it was still in development after I asked about it about a month back . Its didnt even show up at the NAMM about 3 weeks ago. I bet it doesn't even show up till next years Winter NAMM.

Oh bummer. I was holding off on buying an Ultra XL because I thought that was coming out shortly. I looked into an Ultra XL and was told they didn't even bother to do an all black face plate for the XL because the Curve was coming soon.

I actually just got an ULTRA module and am starting to like it better than the UltraXL. Its the XL with more of a mid scoop.

Hopefully the Orange is Anthony's Mandarin. Engl would be cool as well. I could have Bruce mod it for me so it sounds like my modded 520 preamp. Then I could sell my preamp.
