I'm still new to Randall and this forum, but I feel addicted because of all the optional mod.'s, and then I can't wait to hear them and see the new faceplates.

I checked the other threads, but didn't find any clear-cut comparisons between the Plexi and Brahma modules. I really dig the Plexi and I bought it right before the Brahma was available. Has anyone A/B'd these modules? Would the Brahma be considered an upgrade?

Pete (okstrat): any chance you've modded a Plexi?

Thanks.

I have a plexi, haven't gotten around to tweaking it just yet. I'm not real sure what would be a good mod just because there are some excellent 'modded marshall' modules available (brown, SL+). I can see where I can make some changes though for more gain and stuff.

The Brahma is even more of a Plexi than our Plexi module. The Brahma has the same basic tone, but a lot less gain and is really great if you can really crank up your master volume. You may prefer the Plexi since it has more availble gain if you can't really turn up your amp very loud.

Excellent info. Thanks a lot!

the brown should be painted red with white and black stripes ..after listening to the You really got me & beautiful girls clips ..

One of our guys here is a huge EVH fan. He said that he might do that to his module. I'll shoot you guys a pic if it happens.

*cough* I'm working with a guy on something like that for mine, but it'll probably be a decal. Kinda hard to do with a faceplate unless you want to spray paint it. Plus a decal is pretty easy to do. I thought my really got me clip was ok, but I think my beautiful girls clip was pretty much spot on, except I don't have the same type of attack/playing style as EVH. I'm a lot lighter with both hands.

i think the understated, underlying message from RD/Rich's earlier post is the exceptional QUALITY of the tone from the Brahma module!!!

How about this?

okstrat, those face plates look awesome! Are they decals? I was thinking white with black stripes like EVH's first striped guitar as on the cover of the first album--but the red with black is awesome too. I just ordered some marshall knobs for my SL and my Brown mod, but it would be cool to do my faces like that also. How did you do it?

The 'brown' module is a graphic. All the other plates I do are etched plastic. I can also do metal, but I prefer the plastic - easier and a little cheaper. Plus more variety in colors. Email me, I have an SL+ in stock if you want one. :)

I tried doing a white/black stripes one, it didn't have the same visual impact imho as red/white/black stripes. I'm not going to make the 'VH look' stuff available though, don't want EVH and his attorneys sueing me. :)

Hmmm...

How close are the Plexi and Brahma design-wise? Enough so that you could set up a switch to toggle between them?

So by my understanding of this, the Plexi should be able to get the Brahma overdrive, but the eq section maybe different.

It sounds like the Plexi could benefit from a gain reduction switch. Is that what a Plexi+ is? Of course with the added mid shift switch.

I don't think so. My understanding is the Plexi+ is a rebadged 1086. From descriptions it can go from Plexi mid gain to high gain. The mid switch/scoop from what I have heard is terrible. Pete's 1087 mod fixes this from what I was told. I have a 1086 in transit that I hope shows up tomorrow. If so I can give a review of it then.

I was eyeballing a Brahma, but I don't know anymore, especially if it has less gain. One description said it was more thoaty than the Plexi, but I don't really know what that means.

Brahma(at least mine) has a great range on the gain control, wonderful cleanish plexi to super lead driven tones when gain is @ 3:00ish(mine was modded/corrected by Friedman)

Sorry to rehash an old thread but I've just got a Brahma with what appears to be a mod of some kind (C3 has a couple RC's in it ). Anyways, what is this correction I keep hearing about to the Brahma? Cheers, Lucius

I just spent 2 hrs comparing the Blackfaced Brahma and my ol trusty Plexi.
result? True, as Steve says "same basic tone" in both units..but there are important differences in how they respond and where their eq dials function.
The bottom line is: the Plexi has less mids (like a very wide -4db smiley face eq from like 300hz-800)...whereas the Brahma has that flat. I guess some people hear that as throaty.
The Brahma also seems more compressed sounding than the plexi ..when I had its gain pushed I was thinking of a Soldano for a minute(reminded me of an old song by RATT). And while thats ok for some..I like to really play my rig..so i dont like any LESS dynamic range. I like PUNCH. I like punch even more than distortion,honestly..so no wonder I am obsessing over these 2 medium gain modules.
I could use either and very few people would ever know....but I dont want to be quite as IN YOUR face as the Brahma seems to "project". So I prefer the Plexi. And its stock, btw.
Hope this helps.

Brahma seems to be voiced a little more modern...kinda like a lower gain SLO type sound mixed with Marshall, the plexis have more pure midrange like a Marshall without the modern SLO-ish feel.
