I'd like to publicly thank rob for creating such a cool module. Currently I'm playing this module 90% of the time. its great for high saturated gain as well as lower and stiffer applications. I was even able to use it to pump my Hoof fuzz pedal through.
Let me start by saying that I was a little disappointed when I got the module. To me, it didn't sound like either of the Quick Rods I used to own. My QR's were similar to 80 Ratt, Lynch tones. They were the most stiff and unforgiving amps I'd ever played. The tones they could produce were great, but I wasn't the kind of player who could elicit great sounds out of them. I sold them as they were too stiff for me. So, when I got MY QMGT, and plugged into it and it didn't feel like my old QR's I was a bit disappointed. It didn't feel dry or too stiff. Instead, it felt like a 2210 Jcm800. It felt compressed, gained out and easy to play.
Rob said that he based the QMGT on a new Splawn with a tweak to the power section, making the amp less sharp and more forgiving. For me, these changes have made this module a real player for me. I find that if I dial the gain back and used OD1, I han get it sounding similar in tone and feel to the old QR I used to have. When doing this, I have to be much more aggressive with my pick attack. Its still not as stiff as the QR's of old, but for me, its a good thing.
With the gain up in OD1, or in OD2 mode on any of the gears, this module transforms into something my old QR's weren't capable of. The level of perceived gain this module has, borders on the ridiculous- but it doesn't ever feel like a fire-breather. All of the gain is kept in control. The compression helps in this area.
Today I was playing on Gear 1, OD1 with the gain at 11 o'clock. I was going for more of a classic rock vibe. I turned on my fuzz pedal and the tome was magnificent! It didn't just sound like a boost, but rather great garage rock that was distorted without being mussy. The QMGT also takes boosts with ease.
As with any module, it can't do everything well. I don't think the module cleans up as well as some others. Its great for hard rock/ classic metal. But this module would be my first choice if I was using it as a single channel amp. When playing the QMGT, I also use an orange based module for my cleans. The two complement each other perfectly. Also, I found too much "boom" while using the module with V30's. Once I used my G12's or EVH heritage greenbacks, this module really spoke to me (if that makes sense).
Anyhow, I just wanted to post my thoughts on the module. Its a really cool piece of kit
