Hey guys. :)
I recently picked up an RM100m MTS head, and fell in love with it.
But the tone isn't satisfying. I think this would be due to the shitty Behringer cabinet I'm running it through.
So Right now I'm in the market for a new cabinet to suit the RM100.
Versatility is key in this case also. ;)

So yeah, Recommend away! :D

Welcome to the MTS world!!There are lots of cabs that sound really good. The Randall,Genz benz,Egnater,Mesa, avatar,Port City, lots of good stuff out there. So what price range you looking at and speaker type?

Price range, well..
Anywhere up to 900 dollars. Mind you I'm Australian, and get raped with prices.
I was thinking of maybe a used 1960a, with two V30's and two gt12-75's.
Or a new Randall RA412xc with the same configuration as the 1960a.
But hey, I'm open to recommendations. ;)

I have a marshall 1960 slant cab (two of them, a JCM 800 and a 900) - my Randall MTS 2x12 sounds better than either of them and it's smaller.

Plus it matches, how cool is that? ;)

Hey Moe,
Welcome to the MTS club. I'm also in Australia and run an Ulbrick oversized 2x12 with my RM100. Awesome sound. There's a guy on Ausband selling an Orange 2x12 for $800. would be a much better cab than a Marshall.

A few of the guys here on this forum also rave about Avatar cabs. There's a guy in Melbourne who is now selling them here. He's put a few of them up on ebay. There's a quad and some 2x12's.

If you're in Melbourne, there's a Peavey 5150 cab in Music Swop Shop in Carlton for $600. http://www.musicswopshop.com.au/images/stockImages/DSCN8275-MSS 5419.JPG
Marshall cabs aren't the best in the industry. The are readily available, and are a good refference point to compare things to. Regardless, when looking for a cab consider quality construction. Some great Aussie made cabs would be Ulbrick or Achilies. Also, try speaking to a Randall dealer and see what sort of deal you could get for a Randall 4x12 with Vintage 30's http://www.bmusic.com.au/prod4616.htm
For your budget, I'd recommend trying to chase down the Orange cab first.
Cheers
Damian

Thanks smokey. :D
And yes, I am in Melbourne and did check out the 5150 in the swop shop. ;)

Hey Moe

I bought that Randall cab with V30's from Shane at bmusic for about a grand. I run my Lynch box through it and it sounds awesome!

Do any of you guys have sound clips of the amp used with a certain cabinet?

I'm not setup to recorded just yet ( just bought a new house ) but I did write a few easy and safe cab mods on another site. I did it to my Randall RA412XLT and was delighted by the results. Its stocked with V30's but it was a little boomy until after my mod. After modification the cab is actually the best I have ever owned. I still have it and never plan to sell or trade it. I like it that much, plus it matches my Cyclone and my heavy modded RM100.

Get a Presonus EQ3B !

No thanks, I'm mainly looking for a new cabinet.
But how would the Presonus EQ3B help with the tone, might I ask?

ah sorry, i mis-read/didn't read enough. It wouldn't! haha. But still I think something like the EQ3B can give the RM100M that extra kick, especially for mids.

Do you think I should get a EQ pedal? Or save a little longer and get a Randall RA412xc cabinet to replace the crappy Behringer cab?

What exactly is it that you don't like about your current tone? I'm not sure which speakers you have in the Behringer. I assume they're pretty lame, as well as the cab construction. But you'd probably get a less subtle effect if you used an eq. I guess it just depends on how dis satisfied with your sound you are and what exactly is wrong with it.
I was having some trouble with attack and clarity on some really heavy high gain stuff I was doing with the RM100. I switched to an XL cab, which is about the best Randall makes. It was an improvement, but not so much in the area that was lacking in the first place. I discovered a mod on grailtone that took care of the problem lickety split, though.

The speakers in the Behringer are the Bugera speakers, so you can imagine how bad it sounds.

I'm not sure though, it's hard to say what I'm not happy with, but it's mainly the overall tone due to the speakers and cab, which seem to be giving the tone a bit of a dull and/or bad colouring if you catch my drift.

I've tried a variety of EQ's and the only thing I can be happy with is a clean tone from the blackface module. My only complaints on the clean are that the cab can give it too much treble. Striking on open chord with that really pierces the ears.

So I guess all I really need is a new cab that gives a lot of warmth, Low end, and what not.

If you want even more information on tones I like, listen to Breaking Benjamin's clean tone on Diary of Jane, and the distortion tone on Breaking Benjamin's Dance with the devil. The crunch tone I've gotten close to, but still.

So shall I go for a new cabinet?

Musician's Friend is/was blowing out the Randall MTS 4x12 cabinets...which are rear load v30 cabs...sound awesome.

$529 I think....which is around what I paid for my *used* one a year ago or so

Go for it. A better cab could never hurt. You may not stop there, though. For the clean tone, you'll want a compressor of some sort as well. I need to get one for my blackface stuff. It's really uneven sounding now and I have a lot of dynamic in my playing.

Alright.
Thanks for the help guys! :D

Edit: I'm still looking for some recommendations on something that'll give a nice Breaking Benjamin tone by the way. ;)

Hey Moe!

Another proud MTS owner in Melbourne believe it or not. Come check out my setup in action at this gig. Trust me... its worth it... Heheh!

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=130559464&blogID=375585167

Now then, enough with the self promotion.

So, I used to be into BB before I went down the crazy spiral of metal. I can nail that tone pretty close with my 1086 module.
Tone settings as follows:

Level : 1 o'clock
Gain : 2 o'clock
Low : 3 o'clock
Mid : 12o'clock
High : 2 o'clock
Gain boost : ON
Mid voicing : OFF
(this is a really scooped setting, but nails the tone on So Cold)

If you have the Recto module, you can get the same tone, just roll the bass back abit since that module has way more bass boom.

Im using an RM100M, with EL34s and the Presence and Density around 4 o'clock.

The cab I'm using, which is what you are really concerned about is a Randall RA 412 CV. It has 320W of power, so lots of bottom end at 8ohms.

I couldnt afford V30s, so I got these and dude, they come pretty darned close. Try listening to the album without any EQ on it, and tweak your amp till they sound about right.

Keep in mind, what you hear at room levels will be different at louder volumes, so keep tweaking.
I got my Randall cab brand new from a guitar shop off ebay in Canberra for $699 with a speaker lead.

Hope that helps man...

Cheers,
Ashish
