Here are a few videos of some riffs played with the SL+ and then Mr. Scary modules. Modules are stock and the gain is at noon for both.

Great side by side comparison.. to be honest, I am starting to feel that the differences between modules and amps really, is very subtle as they all have common starting ground. I just fired up an XTC this morning and it is a tad thicker and concentrated in the lower mids vs. the hilligan SL+ I have. Other than that, I could probably use 3-4 diff modules live and nobody would really notice when i switched between em!

SL+ stock reminds me of mine.. lacked the cut. The Scary has that cut and a bump in the mids with no muffled top end. This is why i have a Brahma/Scary hybrid which gives me all the definition i could ever ask for. Really cool tone.

Thanks for posting.

This was really great. Love the old Crue riff.

What is your Randall cab loaded with? Which model? Nice full band setup in your basement. Protect your hearing

The Randall cab in the clips has the Vintage 30's. The cab on the other side is the KH cab with the 100 watters in it. It gives a little clearer tone...which makes sense since it takes more to get the speakers to break up. But to tell you the truth...when both are being used and there is a drummer and a bass player doing there things...you can't tell a difference.

My hearing isn't bad considering I spent quite a few years behind the drum kit! lol

In those clips, I hear the Mr. Scary having everything I want in an amp, and the SL+ sounding like it's got that problem I find in some amps that I just can't dial out. Guitars need to cut...

agreed, the SL+ stock doesn't cut... the scary does more so. I like my modules with cut because the perceived lack of bass is filled out by actual bass when you play!

Nice tone comparison. The darkness of the SL+ is evident in the clips. I have tried several mods to give the SL+ some more hi-end, but it is still not to where I'd like it to be.

I'm guessing the Mr Scary module is based on the same pcb as the SL+. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, what are the component differences?

.

There are a few ways to brighten up that SL+. Compare a brighter module with the SL+ board... Scary uses same board and there are only a few component differences really. If you do a search on the forum you'll find gut shots of the scary, adapt it to your SL+ and you are in business.

I had a Hilligan SL that I regret selling...it was a stock faceplate....said uit only had a few minor tweaks, but it sounded very good....wish I could figure out where it went....
