I'll be very interested in the sound of your clips mike.. What are you using tube wise in your amp by the way? v1-v3 and then in the modules? I also should pick up some 6L6's to try with my JF SLO. I keep meaning to.

RM100
Ruby 6L6's
ARS 12ax7's in V1 & V1, Electro Harmonix in the PI
ARS 12ax7's in every module

The module sounds very, very different than your clips but I haven't tried my Warmoth-Charvel clone. Hopefully I'll get to it next week.

Cool, Ive got one these coming today....Cant wait to fire it up. I just got a JF Erect in a trade (my first JF mod) and was very, very impressed with it as well.

Thanks, I had my PI go out on me a few days ago and i wonder about V1. I put a noisy NOS in the effects loop (just noticed this now, noisy as hell) so the only fresh tube i had was a balanced chinese i put in the PI. I'm not 100% happy right now with the tone but have some of those ARS in my modules and like them. Are they essentially chinese?? MY tube place in Canada doesn't stock those..

As for the module sound, yeah mine does sound different, brighter than what you and Matt Fig have posted/experienced??

ARS's are chinese. They are killer, very balanced tone. Trace at Voodoo puts them in his mods.

You can order tubes direct from ARS. http://www.arselectronics.com/

Ask for their ARS branded 12ax7's. It's $1.00 more for the low-noise, tested tubes and I'd recommend those since you're in Canada. They're only a 25 minute drive for me and to date, I haven't had any issues, so I just get the non-tested version.

Yes, your recording was significantly brighter than any SLO I've played through or recorded in the past. The version I have (with the ARS tubes) sounds pretty much dead on to every SLO I've used before. It's thick and clear - not thin or buzzy. It's really freaking awesome!

So does Reinhold and Freidman. They're awesome tube, IMO.

I think I feel compelled to say " I told you so". Lol
In all seriousness I think Robs mods are nothing short of amazing for what I'm looking for tone wise. His new XMG is truely the end all metal tone! The 59RR also blew me away at the versatility and beautiful Marshall grit.

If they're good enough for those guys, they must be pretty **** good. I've only gotten them from Trace but Im an hour away Van Nuys. Next time Im in LA, I am going to stock up! 8)

Mike: Excellent news about the module and glad it met your expectations! I really admire the quality of your clips and look forward to hearing it in use through your recordings.

A big thanks for the heads up on ARS as well. I keep meaning to look around for those but it never crosses my mind while on the web.

Hey Rob, thanks for the kind words. The SLO exceeded my expectations (and they're weren't low to begin with!). When I'm able to plug in my Les Paul and immediately dial in amazing tones, I know I'm dealing with a high quality amp and amp designer. I am extremely impressed and look forward to more of your modules in the near future.

Thank you again!

ahhhh nuts, I just can't get anything right can I! Maybe my ear is tuned differently. I don't like smooth.. I'm trying to get into it but it isn't my scene I guess. I'll try dialing it in differently. So far, I'm off the treble knob full pin but still something not jiving for me.

What speaker and speaker cabinet are you using? What cables?

Guys I'm reading about these ARS and it seems they are just rebranded shuagang chinese. Any knowledge of this? Maybe this is why I dig chinese in some modules.. Maybe i'll play tube swap and see what happens when the ARS replaces the chinese in V1. V2 is purely the effects loop correct?

Funny you should mention cables.. was just reading about those today.

Amp to guitar> Road Hog (tough and durable but not sure about tone)
Amp to speaker cab . planet waves

Cab 4 x 12 "vintage" sized avatar with 2 RI greenbacks (dig the tone of these nice and broken in) and 2 super V lynch speakers. Also pretty sweet.

They've told me that they're made to their specs and they go through and test every tube and they only allow certain tolerances, so they're the best of the best.

Yep they are chinese but tested and burned in, which makes a difference. Some of the Ruby's/GT's are good too due to the same testing. Seems like ARS's selection process is pretty good though. Ive had some Ruby's sounding pretty good too. By the way, I put a JJ ecc803 (long plate) gold pin in the PI of my Randalls- WOW. THis is THE tube for the PI slot. Sounds too fat and round to me for V1 but really good for PI. Really opens up the amp.

I hope you enjoy it. USPS Tracking info looks like tomorrow, but it's on it's way. If it wasn't for my Salvado Deluxe, I'd be hanging on to this one.

Gotcha.. oh, I updated the other info you asked about! (my cab)

I'd recommend either Canare or Mogami cables for both your speaker cable and guitar cable. George L's are great for pedal patching.

As for your speakers, I'm not a fan of the Greenback reissues. The Scumback's blow them completely away and if you're a on budget, the Eminence Private Jack is a better speaker, IMO.

Which speaker have you mic'd up when recording and which speaker did you use for the clips in this thread?

****, tracking says Jan 5th expected delivery when I punch it in..but then the last activity on the item was yesterday up your way... Oh well, I'll have it soon enough!

I always record the greenback in my clips.. that is what I used in the clips I did. I'm actually planning to get a scumback M75 into a 1 x 12 for recording when I get my bonus end Feb. Just pooling together gear to sell right now in order to make some cashola for a cab and for that golden age mic pre. I've been going crazy on renovating my basement studio area and the costs add up like crazy.... glass shower door or cab hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

As for the JJ long pins, I actually had a JJ for the phase inverter before it farted out on me. Generally they are described as being dark or smooth but it really worked in the PI in this lynchbox. Not sure I would sign off on using a shuagang chinese for phase inverter in case anyone cares!
