Sonic Maximizer

I have seen some guitar racks here and there and noticed that some of them use sonic maximizers, in my old band we had one in the p.a. rack but i never really got a good idea of what they do and what they are for... anyone know? im building a rack system and im very curious.

I used one (the pedal version) when I played bass. It made my mediocre solid state bass amp sound a tiny bit less mediocre I guess. It's one of those effects (in my opinion) that sounds way better alone than it does in the mix, but that's just me.

As to what it does I'm not really sure - sorta has a chorus like effect but not exactly. I used it to fatten up my tone, but in the mix things got too muddy.
