What's the best stock modules?

the only modules i have are the recto and XTC, thansk for feeding the GAS. :lol:

I do not believe that the 1086 belong in the worst column, I have recently acquired one and was impressed with it. It is one of the most versatile stock modules you can buy (via the mid shift switch). I have also seen people complain about it not having enough gain. I think people misunderstand what gain is...... 1086 has just as much gain as the Ultra but the Ultra is more "aggressive " sounding because of the way it is voiced. 1086= Mesa/ hot-roded Marshall & Ultra = the Randall punch in the face tone.

Not trying to take sides here... I do agree with that statement... listen to the amp or in this case preamp and choose. Thats the only thing that matters.

If it works for you use it. If it doesn't then it's time to move on. This explains my recent second Lynch Box aquisition... these amps work great for me.

I want a 1086 and a SL+ as it sounds form descriptions given here that I will be able to find use for these preamps... it would be nice to try them first though as one never knows.

Any takers on a Grail to trade for a SL+ or 1086???

The 1086 has a lot of gain but not all of it is usable. In my experience it was thin and sterile. If you want a plexi sound then get the plexi, if you want a rectifier sound then get the grail, and if you want a mix then the KH2 and KH3 do a much better job.

I'll agree with you that it has some versatility but I prefer it doing one thing well instead of a couple of things mediocre. Once it is modded by either Pete, Rob, or Anthony then it can be a great module.

I have to agree on the lynch modules being the best. A,B'ed the top boost and the super v, and my scary with a plexi boosted, and the SL+ modded to jcm800 and the lynch stuff sounds like they have already been modded. They all have the clarity mods done to them. Could they be better modded? I don't know but stock they are great. Oh yeah, the plexi, blackface and jtm are my other choices for best stock. The plexi is the best for running pedals.

stock XTC and 1086, with the right tubes in them, throw a good gain boost pedal in front+ great sounding modules, unmodded.

I completely agree with that, I own all but the Grail and use them constantly live.
I just felt sorry for the 1086 getting bashed here,
any time I get a new or different module I turn ever knob at 12 o'clock and just listen, soak it in for a little, then start tweaking. I can feel what a module can do starting with everything at a neutral position.

The only module I really have not liked was the KH2....... I can't put my finger on it, just dose nothing for me..... need to get it turned into something by Pete or Antony I guess.
