I am getting an Orangutan mod from Anthony and I thought I had a month to buy a nice used donor module to sacrifice for the mod. Well, my trip to the EU was rescheduled and now I am leaving on Monday and no time to find mod fodder! I know he has used an XTC module in the past, but he pretty much just guts whatever he gets, so I figure a midgainer / gainer should be okay from reading the posts on the Mandarin.

This will be the first module that I "give up" and I like them all, but I suppose one of the kids has got to go, and I can't just pick one myself. So my fellow MTS Forumites, please help me choose which one gets to be the caterpillar that becomes a butterfly:

SL+ (silver w/black stripe)
JTM (new black faceplate and chicken head knobs)
Plexi (silver w/black stripe)

Bear in mind that eventually I will probably mod out all of them, so if there are particular modules that have specific aftermarket fates, I'd like to hold them back (e.g. Plexi into Brown?).

Thanks.

p.s. if you are local in Chicago and have a nice, cheap suitable module I can pick up this weekend, please PM me.

If you can't find another module then I would suggest taking the plexi with you. IMO a boosted JTM can get to plexi territory and an SL+ can do boosted plexi although a bit less open.

^^^ this.

Has anyone heard from Anthony lately? I sent him an email on Friday, but I haven't heard back and I am leaving the EU soon without an address or confrirmation to send it to him.

He could be swamped building mods right now. I sent him a PM last month and haven't heard back so he's probably swamped.

My logic would be the Plexi

The JTM is less popular and (I think) is a slow seller. {this from watching Ebay and reading reviews...and here 8) }

The SL+ is such a great lead {Marshally} tone (even unmodded), that it's quite popular and will retain more original resale value. (esp. unmodded)

The Plexi is a great base/foundation for most any Rock/Pop rhythm tone and good for biting leads, too.

Yes, he adds a switch to make it high and low gain. The low gain is plexi only better. It's hard to describe but its great. I'm in a 70's 80's cover band (AC/DC,GNR etc.) and this module does it all.

The lower gain has more mids and spanks a little more. If I dial down the gain I can get almost a Fender vibe and the more gain I add it keeps that feel but melds in the Plexi thing It tops out gain wise about the same or a little more than stock. Perfect AC/DC style 70's rock. Throw a clean boost, Tube Screamer or SD-1 in front and look out.

The high gain trims some of the mids and makes it fatter but it keeps the modded plexi feel. Perfect for 80's rock.

If it's in my RM100 I use the clean channel and boost it. If its in my RM20 I use the high gain and use the boost function for solos. I recommend anyone with a Plexi to get this done. Rob did a fantastic job.
