why do you use EMG's?

I've never liked the idea of having to put batteries in my guitar, there's enough electricity going on already...

Having said that, I find EMGs sound godawful when going clean...
 
I've found actives god awful playing clean. I know turn down the knob about 50%. True, but then I don't care for the response. I'd rather use alnico passives.
 
81 in the bridge is too ice picky for me. 85 or 89 sounds good high gain or clean to me.

It's actives in general; every time I've played a guitar with 'em, they've had kind of a dead, sterile tone on cleans...
