The original single channel versions can not be modified to accept single modules. They use entirely different MIDI programs and main PCB's.
 
I have a lead on an dual M4 for you. The price will not be "forum bargain-basement prices" as it is a backup from Linkin Park's past touring rig. Email me if interested.
