The design of the speaker enclosure will have a bearing on the overall tone, but the benefits of allowing the amp to be pushed hard and get speaker distortion (depending on the speaker) are nice. It will take some tweaking and work but they can be very useful.

You should be able to. I subbed KT77's in for EL34's on my Mark IV when I had it and it worked great.

without extensive modification the 50/50 will only run EL84's. It propbably would be a better idea to just buy a different power amp if you wanted to run something else that requires an octal socket.

I've always liked JJ's EL84's, but the TAD EL84's are great as well. I switched over to them a year or two ago. They've got great bass.
