I thought I'd share my experience for any of you who might be looking for these kinds of devices. I have an older 2nd generation iPod Touch. First I purchased an IK Multimedia iRig. Their free apps suck! Their $20 app sucks too, you just get more sucky stuff. I was surprised, as Amplitube on my Mac sounds pretty good.
So I found a free app called AMPKIT. As it turns out, it's made by Peavey! It sounds great! You can purchase more amps and FX as you need them. These sounded great too! But the iRig causes feedback with headphones. Just stay away from that one!
Peavey makes a similar I/O device called AmpKit LINK. This is supposed to provide better sound an zero feedback. It is only $29!
Sonoma Wire Works makes a high end I/O device called GuitarJack that connects to the multi-pin connector rather than the headphone jack, but it runs $149! However, their version 2 hardware just came out and the original is being blown out for only $49! The older unit is compatible with my 2nd generation iPod Touch, So I just ordered it and put my iRig on Ebay. I wish I could get a refund for IK's shitty $20 app!
Line6 also has a new device called Mobile In, which also connects to the multi-pin connector, but it is not compatible with iPod Touch. It runs $79, but the app is free and full blown. 32 amps, 16 FX, etc. If I had a new iPhone or iPad, this would probably be the one to get.
I'll post again when the new Sonoma Wire Works GuitarJack arrives in a few days.
