New RM4 Owner

Finally came over to the darkside after getting bored with dealing with issues with my current rig. Looking forward to talkin gear and kickin it here.

And had a few noob questions since im used to head's, combo's and that sort of setup.

What is the best route to go when hooking up a G-Major to a RM4. I read the number of different ways but everyone tends to say this one works better no this one works better. So I figured I would ask and see what was the best option for myself. Im looking at using all the features of the G-Major while retaining transparency and tone. Also I would like to be able to switch channels and presets on the G-Major as well. Example say I have the 4 button footswitch. Channel one would be switched on and preset 1 on the G-major and so on down the line. Nothing to fancy.

Second question is what poweramp do yall recommend? Was looking at getting a Peavey Classic 50/50 or holding out for something like a RT2/50, VHT, Engl or Mesa. Is the cost difference extremely noticable in comparision to one another and which would you all recommend as the best for the RM4.

Welcome to the darkside. I run my G Major between the RM4 and power amp...don't even bother with the loops. Connect a MIDI cable out from RM4 into the G Major and set any channel you want to any channel on the foot switch. As far as power amps, the most versatile would be the RT2/50, but just about anything will sound good. I use a Mesa 2:100 set to modern mode and it's a freakin' monster.

fwiw: when I first heard the Rm4 it was into a Peavey power amp. I think it was the model you mentioned. I almost didnt buy the RM4 on account of it..and that would have been tragic. Because the Rm4 is amazing...and I am a guitarist now with over 20 years experience and teach guitar and have been lucky enough to own more gear than almost anyone I meet.
That said, When I finally heard the Rm4 with an RT2/50 it was MAGIK.
The difference is palpable..and essential. Without a really good power amp you can't hear just how good the RM4 is. I ,myself had to drive 9 hrs to hear one (because at the time noone near me had one in stock)..and it was worth it.
Maybe the Mesa does as good a job, I never tried one. But a number of people here love their's.
For me, I heard the Peavey and it was just anemic. I held out and did the drive heard the RM4 with a RT2/50..and I never looked back..and have never wanted to.
You NEED to hear an RM4 with an RT2/50.
I know its alot of money...I know they are heavy...
but its worth it.

I've just come back to the RM4 after a long time in amplifier purgatory. When I had my first RM4 I only used it for recording...never gigged with it and at the time it had only been out for a few months so there wasn't the brilliant bunch of Mods available that there are today. My question is, is anyone here using a Marshall 9100/9200 or nwere series monoblock with there RM4 and if you are, what do you think?

Never used the 9200 with the RM$ when I had one, but I did use one back about 8 years ago with a JMP-1 and loved it back then. Only good reason I had for getting rid of it was weight.

It seems you are answering all of my posts this morning. I've never used either the 9100 or 9200, but I have a line on one of each and the prices are good. I can see where the weight might become an issue though...I'm getting old and creaky and lugging one of those around may mean wearing a truss. I would like to try one in the studio though. I had previously just gone diriect to the computer with the RM4 and while it sounded good, I think it could sound better.

i'm just busting on faith. i had a 9100 years ago, it was pretty beefy wiht the poundage. its sounded great and was the only peice of gear that stayed constant in the rack back then. i had parted with it to get a dual rec. this is one of those peices you wish you hung onto.

The 9200 is twice the amp the 9100 is, so who's the lightweight now Bobby? :lol:

That thing was like 65 pounds alone! In the "tonal benefit vs reality of transporting it" battle it lost out big time. And I was 22-23 at the time!

Now that I think of it, when I ditched the RM4 + RT2/50 setup it too was after a gig in Philly with a long, narrow flight of stair up to the club. Seems to be the death kiss to any rack rig I have ever gigged out with. Add damage points if the gig is on a snowy winter day and there is knuckle banging around corners involved.... :evil:
