So anyways, I've never owned an XTC but played three different ones. Nice amps! One thing they have is an overwhelming smoothness and lots of mids.

So... I modded an XTC for yes, smoothness and lots of mids. It's ok for rhythms, but KILLS for leads. You still have plenty of high end, but it doesn't have the roughness that the stock module has.

Hopefully I'll be able to do some clips soon, I'm really digging this for leads, will have to try it out at my gig saturday. All my gigs are turning into Randall module R&D outings! :)

Sounds interesting :) I like my XTC module for leads a lot :)

This one is just in a different direction... I don't like this one as much for rhythm personally, it's a LOT smoother and refined sounding. I like my rhythm tones to have more of an edge... it also has much more pronounced midrange, not scoopy at all.

Does anyone have any sound samples of the standard XTC through an RM100? I got myself an RM100 a couple of days ago with the Clean, ultraXL and Ultra Lead mods. The ultra lead is too weak and not enough gain for the lead sound I want, as I prefer high gain for a 'Rusty Cooley' style of playing. Basically sweeps etc... I use the ultraXL for low tuned heavy rhythm playing and I prefer a different higher mid and volume sound for leads, with an equal or slightly less amount of gain.

To my ear, the XTC isn't close gain-wise to the Ultra or XL. Your best bet might be to mod an Ultra or XL for more mids... as far as gain goes, the Ultras are imho towards the top of the Randall module food chain.

I know you need a lot of gain to do modern techniques, but try playing with less gain - you get more clarity to your notes and more articulation. It's harder to do, but I can sweep/do whatever I need to with a lot lower gain than I used to use, and it even makes me sound faster because you can hear every note. Sometimes that high gain just hides what you're playing, for good and bad.

Here's a quick (as in two takes, I forgot about the second part that comes in, and it's clam-filled... basically a 10 minute wonder) clip of the modded XTC.

Yes, it has effects, some delay and 'verb. sounded incredibly dry without them. Used a sennheiser E609 Silver draped over the top of my RM20 combo, was very quiet as the wife was watching TV downstairs. My room for guitar stuff is basically a balcony/open room to below, so it's pretty much like recording in the same room. Master volume was barely on. Also broke a string going for an F# to A bend on the high E string.

Oh, guitar used was a steinberger synapse w/EMGs.

From passion and warfare, good track and well played I must say!
The reason I need a good amount of gain is because I play in C tuning (not drop as that's cheating) and I use 12-56 not even slinkies and it's a pig to do 5-string sweeps perfecty, as the string tension brings the action up moreso than a lighter gauge (and having a floyd rose, I hate them). And for that tuning- enough gain sounds cool to me as it's personal preference. As you said for modding an UltraXL mod, wouldn't you get more gain by changing the tubes in the Ultra Lead?

Pete...would it be fair to say that this is closer to the 'blue' channel than the 'red' channel of the XTC?

I've heard that the blue is a lot smoother and darker and the XTC (stock) module sounds more like the higher gain 'red'
