I want to replace my preamp tubes for my randall rm 100 what type are the best for the input,,, phase inverter,, and the effects loop can anyone recommend the best type of preamp tubes in each location I know you're supposed to have a decent brand in the input location and I've used a Jan 5751 for the effects loop that seemed to cut back on some noise I was having with my G System does anybody have any recommendations Thanks

I really like the Sovtek 12AX7 LPS in the PI. I also generally use a Ruby HG+ 12AX7 in V1. V2 I play with until I'm happy and varies in my Egnater modular between amps, (edited to add) but I honestly find little difference.

For the PI the Sovtek LPS and the JJ803, which I'm currently using in my Mod50, work great there. I'll have to try that Ruby HG, I have a Tungsol in there now and it seems to be a bit on the bright side. A good stock tube in V2 will do.

After weeks of obsessive tone hunting, I settled on a tung sol 12ax7 in V1, a JAN GE 5751 in the PI, and just JJ 12ax7's everywhere else (except for V1 in each mod, which are all different and also settled upon via experimentation, and I do find that V1 in the module makes a big difference).

Try swapping that 5751 into your PI slot, I bet you'll like the results!

+1 for the Ruby in V1. Sounds great.

I got the best results out of a GE gray plate type in the PI, and used whatever in the loop position.

I used a variety of NOS types, black plate RCA types in Marshall style, and GE gray plate types in Fender style. Changes were mostly in "texture" rather than "tone" tho. Biggest differences came in using the speaker associated with the sound.

good luck!

JJ's are the cheapest, but beware: one of my JJ's just quit without any obvious reason. Never happend to me with any other brand.

This isn't a JJ thing, it's a tube thing. Tubes of all walks of life can (and do) die at random all the time.

Thanks for the replies! I ended up get all new poweramp tubes I ended up buying a quad set of Groove Tubs E34Ls , and a few different brands of preamp tubes wow! what a difference so far! I definitely had some bad preamp tubes that were going microphonic? or making high pitch feedback at stage volumes while on distortion but what a huge difference still moving around preamp tubes to different locations.
