Two words: Line Level.

The FX loop is line level and 95% of the effects pedals out there need a -15 dbu PAD in front of them to use the Randall Loops. The PAD works essentially like turning your channel volume way down. Framus also uses line level.

EHX stuff is designed for -10 dbu unless otherwise stated.

Eventide Timefactor, Pitchfactor, and some of the TC Nova stuff is for Line Level.

The FX loop is designed for pro rack gear. If you don't want to go that route, your best bet is the TC Nova System, or if you've got the bucks the G-system.

The reverb tank as used in the RM50 is more than just a tank. There is a complete reverb amp, driver, recovery amp and send on a PC board mounted on the tank.
It gets power from a 12V AC tap on the chassis. You can order it complete
through a Randall dealer (I did) and all you need is a 12V AC (there's a rectifier/filter built into the PC board) wall wart that can supply around
750ma or so. They're common for telco equiptment.
I use it with an RM4-RT2/50 set up.
