Have you guys ever played with the pre-amp volume to master volume ratio's?

For example, I played around with running the master volume really low (15%) and the pre-amp volume really high. Kinda like what one would do with the old Marshall master volumes.

On the opposite side of that, running the master volume at full and pre-amps lower. Probably what most people do.

Personally I think the amp sounds weird with the master at full and I usually run it at 75% and the pre-amps at 15%.

Just wondering what you guys think and have tried.

I've also just run two power tubes in my RM100 for about 6 months now. Really, I don't see any difference in that besides saving some cash on two tubes over four.

That sounds like a good way to go actually or at least start from. I'm considering ordering all new tubes from Bob at Eurotubes. At the moment the amp is just sounding, well a lot like ***.

It's got a pair of E34L's but still the stock pre-amp tubes.

...what do you expect running the amp with just 2 tubes...

Are you serious??? So then I guess the original 50watt Marshall JCM 800's must be crap then right cause they only had two power tubes? And the countless other amps that run the same way or even on one?

Hey it's ok. I understand that you don't know any better.

why do you jump on me
i just expressed my thoughts

i believe there is a difference if an amp is built to use just 2 tubes and has just 2 sockets
or if the amp is built to use 4 tubes and has 4 sockets thatfor...

I jumped on you because what your comment was saying is that I'm stupid.

Your belief that the amp being built to hold 2 or 4 tubes is just simply incorrect. What you can do with a 4 tube head is mix tubes but they can still but run just fine on 2. Simply having more tubes is not neccessarily better.

I have plenty of times tried the four tubes then switched to the two tubes and back and there is no percievable difference. And the overall volume only changes by 3db.

Try checking your bias 1st, they come very cool from the factory, Also make sure u got it mated with the correct ohm setting with your cab+ the cab itself depending what u got will make a huge difference to the overall sound. Sounds wonderful thru my mesa 2x12, not so crushing on my carvin 4x12....nicer cleans though

Also, Make sure your modules have been modded and you got good preamps/tubes on them. Trust me, if i had bought my rm100 with the recto and the clean....i would have returned it altogether and never bothered with it again.

Btw, The head at lower to mid volumes with 2 powertubes (el34's in my case) doesn't sound that much different than when equipped with 4 IMHO.
