Hey,

I've noticed a decrease in gain lately in my RM80. It used to be full and powerful, but now it is kind of thin and weak. Any ideas?

I think it might be a cable...but i've tried replacing the one i thought was bad and i didn't notice much difference (i replaced it with an old one, not new).

I'm also thinking it may be the preamp tubes. I haven't changed them since i got it (July). And it was used, so i don't know when the last switch was. Considering the fact they are all EH's, i'd say it's been a while. As far as the tubes in the 1087 go, i'm not sure when it was last switched...but i think it is up for one pretty soon. I was going to switch them up anyway just see if i can improve my tone, but i don't have the money at the moment.

I changed the power tubes right away, so those should be good. They are JJ 6V6's. They are biased to around 22 mV.

The only hi gain module i have/use is the 1087 (earlier version of mod). Here are my settings across the board:

1087:
Gain: 3 o'clock-max
Bass: 2 o'clock
Mids: 3 o'clock
Treble: 4-5 o'clock
Level: 9-11 o'clock

Master: 10-11 o'clock
Effects: 0
Density: 12 o'clock
Presence: 12 o'clock.

I'm only running it through an ISP Decimator at -30 db.

Thanks, John.

My theory would be tubes. A complete retube would be a good idea if you want to get the most out of your amp anyways, as I'm doing the same with my amp. It probably wouldn't hurt to try different guitars through it as well, just in case it could be a problem with the guitar wiring.

If you're getting a loss of gain, balls, or just plain "oomph" it could be the power tubes. If you hear anything microphonic, it's probably the preamps.
