Hey fellas - I'm still reasonably new to this Randall thing, but I now have more modules than spaces in my RM100 to put them. These are mostly for studio use and I don't mind swapping them out all the time, but would prefer just to rack 'em and leave 'em. Is there a way to get the RM4 and somehow use it in conjunction w/my RM100 or is it best to just keep getting more RM100's?

Any looper/switcher will do this. Two loops will be enough or if you wanna control effects after the preamp as well, 3-4 loops. For example GLab Looper2: http://www.thomann.de/de/g_lab_midi_2x_looper.htm

Connect the RM100 speaker out to a cab.

GUITAR goes into Looper/Switcher INPUT
LOOP1 SEND to RM100 IN
RM100 FX SEND to LOOP 1 RETURN
LOOP2 SEND to RM4 IN
RM4 OUT to LOOP2 RETURN
LOOPER OUTPUT goes to RM100 FX RETURN

Done. Now you can switch in either the RM100 preamp or the RM4 preamp via midi, as well as switch the correct module(s) on the amp(s) all with one program change.

I do the same with a Conrford Mk50H and a GrooveTubes Trio. Works a treat and gives me 4-5 channels.

Loop 1 send

very cool - Thx for the tip hunter! Now, if I just wanted to do something simple at first w/out loops or midi switching - could I literally just take a 1/4-inch from the RM4 to the RM100 or would I need something else?

Simplest way possible is to run the line out from the RM4 into the Series Loop Return of the RM100 with a regular 1/4' cable...plugging this in automatically defeats the modules in the RM100.

Of course then you manually swap the guitar signal from the input of the RM100 to the RM4.

I ran this way for years before going the switcher route...ultimately landed me with 3 RM4s, two amps and a fair sized rack of gear...

Now I'm back to just one RM50 and probably much happier...apart from the constant module swapping ;-)

Thx JKD - I may just try that at first. I'm assuming you could do the same thing w/their 1250 then too? (I'm afraid I may end up w/a dozen before too long)

Sure if you only wanna run the RM4 through the power section of the RM100, then just connect the RM4 preamp out to the poweramp in of the RM100 (loop return that is). If you need 7 modules at your foot, you need the switcher as explained. Plus you will need some kind of midi controller to switch the programs of course.

Mostly for studio use - but if we ever get to playing out much again, I will prob rig it up that way. Either way, it's good to know all I need is an RM4 for my immediate purposes - time to check the classifieds again...

I used to have an RM4 that I used with my RM100LB. I ran the RM4 to the effects loop of the RM100LB and used a Tonebone SwitchBone (a high end A-B box) to switch between the two. Worked really well.

The Switchbone is cool if you don't have a midi setup. But it's 3 times the price of the GLab looper and doesn't have midi out of the box.

If you keep on buying modules I think I would go for some rack gear. Holds more modules and takes up less space.

Hell, if you can deal with its size and weight, buy a 1250...It has 12 module spaces and the 50 watt power amp.. Music Go Round was selling new ones on Ebay for $800!!!!!!! If they made a 4 or 6 space version I'd buy one...

Actually those for $800 were used and refurbished music go round deals with strictly used gear. That's were I snagged mine though for $600 with trades :). By the way the rm1250 weighs alot less than a rm100 for those curious.
