Hey tones guru's any one out there have any luck nailing Randy's guitar tone on the Tribute Cd? I think thats exactly what i want in my lead tone. I am using the RM 4 with a Boss GT-Pro run in the 4 cable method. My modules are the Ultra XL, Recto, XTC x 2, and the 1O86...if need be i don't mind buying another module or having it modded any suggestions?

I would think pretty much any of the Marshall inspired modules could nail that....give the amp a bit of volume, reverb&delay to taste and you're set.

1086 should hit it in low gain mode....voicing switch not set to scoop :D

while we are on the subject.... of the 1086 ok so the mid voicing which side is supposed to be marshall like and which is supposed to be mesa like?

From memory, I think the switch set to the left scoops the crap out of the tone and just leaves the low(er) mids....which is supposed to be rectifier(ish)...but my memory could be faulty.

I don't think it cops Mesa/Marshall that well..which is why I sold mine (twice) but at a push, it's at least flexible.

thats so close to the tone its sick... curious tho... if you crank the pres on your amp or the treble on the module does it get that bite? thats one of the things i love most about Randy's tone (the live tone) is the "sticky" sound it has where when you listen you just feel like that tone is going to stick to you like wet paint...its that hair....

Hey also does anyone know.... if you use the egnater stuff with the RM4 can you use both channels or ya just stuck>?

One channel only.....Ch A unless you have the modukle modded, then it's Ch B only.

The RM100 can be modded to work with both channels but it's a mail-away mod (two boards need to be changed/upgraded) that costs about $400 I think.

Get a Les Paul or equally crappy sounding guitar, run that into a crappy pedal like a Distortion +, run that into an MXR 10 band using a rainbow (frown) EQ, crank the gain on a fuzzy amp like a mid gain Marshall amp (or module), turn your mids all the way up, and you should be pretty close to getting the Rhoads sound :D . Good luck.

  I have say, no offense to anyone, but Randy Rhoads' tone is not a very good tone, it's way too distorted and just way too much crappy mids. Even in Guitar World, it was chosen by the ed. as some of the worst guitar tone ever.

Yeah, I have to agree that I'm not overly fond of the tone, BUT I'm mostly a rhythm player who palm mutes a lot. However, I think that Randy's LEAD tone was spectacular, of course, his lead tone was his rhythm tone, and a spectacular lead tone equals a craptacular rhythm tone, really :D .

Thats because Randy didn't have an RM100 :D Rest his metal soul but I like to think that if he were around today he would love this amp.

I have to say that I semi-agree with you, I think the live tone was MUCH better that on Blizzard and Diary...those album were horribly mixed. But i guess thats what happens when you are making a low budget album in England in 1980.

The tone though isn't all that good for rhythm but its what I was as a basis for my lead tone...but still I dont think its all that bad when compared to the rock of the day every one was trying to get more gain from their rigs.... atleast it didnt have that off-axis mic sound that plagued the records of the day...and it wasnt for about 4 or 5 more years that Ratt and Dokken found their "kick-***" tones either

I think the epitomy of great , kick *** rock tone was 10 years after, when Giant's first album came out, Dann Huff had a montrous but really liquidy, biting midrange tone that was both defined and massive.

oh btw: I agree Dan Huff's tone with GIANT was FEIRCE!!!

But to nail that Randy-tone (the studio version), I think the Plexi (or similar module) with a Boss Metal Zone (MT-2)in front should do it.
Essentially this does what a MXR distortion+, a 10 band EQ and some more EQ from the board did for him, back in the day.
To me, listening to Randy just shows how displaced he was. He was just doing the Ozzy band to get a head, seeings how Quiet Riot hadn't done much. And he basically grabbed whatever gear was available "off the shelf" to help him get close to what a new-metal (NWBHM, if you know the term) sound was like.
But he was really much, much more than a rock guitarist.
When I hear those old recordings I hear a guy bending over backwards to accomodate an ageing concept, an old form...and somehow blowing the lid off of it.
Well done, Randy....I STILL miss you.

To me to nail the Randy Tone , you have to own a Loud Marshall Half Stack , I just bought a JCM 800 and I boos it with a SD-1 jsute like Zakk Wylde did , but I have a Dimebucker instead of EMG , Dimebucker got a lot of output and High . On my JCM 800 I put presence on 10 , bass on 5 , mids on 5 , treble on 2 , gain on 10 , master at 3-4 ,and on my SD-1 Volume at noon , tone at noon and gain at 10 ! so I don't know if you can get this on a Randall , Randall have a lot of low ends in their tone anyway the best would be a plexi with a boost in front of and believe me I'm a real Rhoads fan , I know what I'm talking about :p

I hate to say it, but you're all wrong about kick butt tone. The definition of great distortion tone is Johhny Ramone. Yeah!!!!! :D Anyone got any tips on getting that sound?
