truth is Randy was a brilliant player but had bad tone... the tribute tone is cool though. Mostly Randy's tone suffered from to much pedal distortion ala MXR and he used an MXR eq pedal as well... like Tung said the mids were crappy. Randy had everything else right... Les Paul and Marshall. Too bad he never got his hands on a Soldano.

It's a matter of taste , I think it's true that a great rythm tone made a bad lead tone and a good lead tone make a bad ryhthm tone, randy choosed is lead tone to be nice but you can feel he know how to use his high to rythm nice riff ....also don't take an opinoin on his tone by listenning to his 2 studio album , listen to Tribute it's much better , live his sound was incredible , like Jimmy Page in studio he had a bad tone but live kick some *** !

thanks for the props, jmgman
I try to choose my words carefully.

And speaking of...you guys criticizing Randy's tone....Im not sure you get the fact that those CDs were done on the cheap and about 25 years ago.
You make it seem like Randy didnt know what he was doing..and if that's where you're going , I disagree.

I think that originally Randy was a fish out of water playing for Ozzy, as he was using a Les Paul into a MXR distortion + into a 10 band with the mids peaked into a mid-gain Marshall head, all of which are warm and fuzzy on their own. The only other option is that Randy was sacrificing his rhythm for a killer lead sound. I think he was going to right direction by switching over to Jackson before he died. I agree that the old Ozzy CD's weren't the best audio quality and that Randy's live tone was better, but I still think Randy's live tone wasn't that spectacular. Just my opinion, take it or leave it. Then again, I hate Les Pauls, old Marshalls, and Distortion + pedals, but that's just me :D .

Yeah but in those years nobody had High Gain Amp you Marshall was High Gain haha I have a JCM 800 and it's sounds awesome man it's just a another kind of tone for another kind of music

Same deal.....Metallica-Kill em all. I love that album!! But it sounded thin compared to the later releases. When seeing them live on that tour it didnt sound thin, it was over the top. But limited to the way it was recorded, etc.....limited the tone. That I am sure is a big factor on the Randy tone. I am sure it sounded really full live in person. Thats why I dont even like to hear demos of gear on the web. You need to hear in person to get the full feel. And I am a big Randy fan, just giving my 2 cents.

Randy's live tone was just HUGE. Believe me, I experienced it and it was unlike anything I had ever heard. I think he had the very first "high gain" sound.

My favorite module is the SL+, but to nail the live Rhoads sound gain and tone wise I use the Ultra XL. It sounds so close it makes me laugh.

Now that's not an answer I would have expected...heh...but yeah, Ultra/UltraXL still my favorite high gainer..and I bet you don't even need an OD pedal to get there with that one

I've seen Ozzy with every guitarist except Brad Gillis (and Bernie Torme if you really want to split hairs :D ) The best tone I ever heard on stage with Ozzy was Joe Holmes believe it or not. I was stunned. Best player was Randy. I am still inspired to this day by Rhoads. I even have a bootleg of that show I went to.

I'm sure all you Rhoads freaks know that website that has tons of Randy bootlegs right? If not, here it is.

I vividly remember a hot summer's afternoon in suburbia. We sat outside near our musicle car with the stereo blasting The King Biscuit Flower hour (a radio show that broadcasts LIVE concerts).
Ozzy was on and it was the first time were hearing his new guitarist. We were huge Eddie VanHalen Fans...we thought he was God.
After a few songs we were punching each other in the shoulder saying "Thats it...this guy is amazing.. Eddie's gonna have a hard time out doing this guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
...Its 25 years later we are still talking about him.
