I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried replacing the tube in a G3 series amp.

First off, I guess....what brand of tube is actually in these amps? Electro Harmonix?

I have a RH300 head and I'm curious how replacing the 12at7 tube with a different brand (like a Tung Sol) would sound. Would it be beneficial? Could you extract more gain with a different tube?

Thanks!

I have an RH150G3 and I pulled the tube out and replaced it with an Electro-Harmonix AT7X. Surprisingly it didn't help out all that much! It did give me a little bit more grit, but not as much as I thought it would.

As soon as I get my recording gear back up and running in a desirable state I'm gonna try and get some comparison tracks, but honestly I didn't think switching the tube was the holy grail to something more devastating... I think Randall already had that nailed!

I don't think putting in a different brand is going to make much of a difference, especially it being one tube.

The sun's gonna burn out before I can fix my computer to get a good sample on here.

So I pulled out the tubes and played for about an hour each switching. There is a difference with 12A7X but it's not enough to warrant rushing immediately to the nearest Guitar Center or wherever and buying a new tube. It just gave it a little more grit and grind but not nearly enough to get the "AH HA" effect.

Hope that helps.
