I have a LynchBox coming in, and I'm sending to Salvation for some mods, but what's the best stock modules (of any style)?

I've heard the Vox-style before, and really liked that. Any others that don't "need" a mod?

I am a MTS noob still but people seem to like the Grail stock and I have also read that the SL+ (post the JCM tweak from the factory after 2007 or so) area supposed to be pretty cool.

I have an Egnater single channel DLX that I think is a sweet stock clean to gritty clean tone and a Grail. The Grail is pretty cool but I prefer it with some type of boost to thin out the low notes just a touch and after seeing the vids with the Orange switch mod, I am going to have that done to mine. That thing sounds almost identical to what I remember my Tverb sounding like.

I'm a noob, too (a yearling)
But I'll second the SL+ by eyeball987. It's got enough gain for most rock and it sustains sweetly as it "sings" every note.
Some others on here have told of the 1086 being the "do-it-all" module for rock & metal. After hearing the talk, I'd tend to beleive them.
The modules that came in miy amp I'll briefly cover.

Blackface: Good clean tone, not much breakup with gain at full. Lacks the low end of other modules.
Plexi: A great middle/vintage distortion for rhythm sounds like old Clapton or maybe Foghat. Good balanced tone.
XTC: Nearly over-the-top distortion but lacks definition, slightly muddy (a blanket over the speakers) even with the treble on full. Not a bad lead channel, but not my cup-o-tea.

I ordered an SL+ module along with my amp after reading the reviews and opinions on here (BTW...Thanks everybody!).
They were right and I immediatly replaced the XTC with the SL+ and used it at a gig right away, (with excellent results).

BUT...5 days ago, I bought a used Deluxe that has been modded (supposedly by www.Gigmods.com) to be beefier with a tad more gain.
It ROCKS now! I think that having these preamps modded is the DEAL!
No matter how good you might think your module sounds, it CAN BE BETTER! (no joke)
Worth every penny (unless copper goes through the roof)

my 2?

All of the signature modules (except the 1086, which sucks..actually it does a passable, if a little thin, Plexi tone...but why not get the Plexi that sounds better) :D

Grail
KH3
Mr Scary
Brahma
Super V
KH2 (tho' I like to boost this :D )
KH1

2008 or later SL+ (has the JCM800 voicing mod as stock)
Ultra/Ultra Lead/UltraXL (how could I forget this!!!)

Top Boost is great sounding (but you already covered Vox)

Blackface is OK...gets a bit trebly with volume tho'

Best:

Ultra XL
Grail
SL+ blackstripe or blackface
Brahma
Mr. Scary
KH3
Super V
Blackface

Worst:

XTC
Recto
1086

If I was stranded on a desert island and could have only one module - it would be the SL+. This preamp just gets it right!

Same here, actually :D I find myself playing it a lot more than my Ultra XL for high gain and any other style!

WOW, great replies, and a great list.

I'm kinda bummed I was hoping that the XTC would be great, but I'll have to go to a mod to get that tone.

The SL+ sounds like a big winner, how do you know if it's a post-2008 version?

grail, KH2, blackface, JTM
I like tone from XTC and SL+, but need some small changings...
and best of all stocks which I have - Eggie VX

The newer SL+ modules have a black stripe above with white text (Gain, Treble, Mids, Bass, Master)
The older ones are all chrome with black text.

The very newest are ALL black with white text.

"The red zone is for loading and unloading only...never park in the red zone"

..I never got much use out of my SL+
it seemed to have much mids..and lack of definition
maybe it was just my module..Im not sure..but I never really liked it. I traded it aways back.

I forgot, kh3 is very good stock along with Tweed & Plexi. It's been on the bench while I've been checking out some new stuff, but now it's back in the amp.

I'm surprised alot of people aren't fond of the stock XTC. I love it quite a bit, and did some recording with it this week. I've been able to get some great grind out of it.

The stock Rectified module didn't really impress me at first, but now that I've cranked it up a bit I'm kinda digging it.

The Top Boost and UltraXL stock are 8) 8) 8)
