Hi folks:

I'm back to Randall amps with an RM22 and would like your recommendations on which modules should I get for playing 80's hair metal, hard rock and shred type music ala Vai or Moore.

Your recommendations are greatly appreciated.

If you are talking about stock modules, Mr Scary and Judge for sure.

Stock = SL+ , Mr. Scary, Grail, and KH-2 ...

Modded would be a hard answer as there are numerous ones to try....You would probably want a good Marshall tone (JF 59RR or Salvation Mashall+) and a good Soldano tone too (Salvation Salvado Deluxe or JF Slo-100)...

Good luck!!!

This is the right answer. I would add a clean boost to the mix also.

My wallet is going to suffer for sure. I want to start with the Ectasy and Mr. Scary for stock modules and perhaps de Salvation Marshall and GTO Jaded for modded modules.

Mr. Scary from what I have heard , and for me, the Judge plus a boost. It is smooth and thick enough to do what you need it to do. For the more classic early 80's tones I quite like my Brahma and a boost. I should mention though that some of the early brahmas were apparently shipped with the wrong values and one of the ones I have was exactly that. It had no gain. It SUCKED. My other one is bitchin though. So make sure you ask the seller how much gain they perceive comes from their module.

is Hair Metal the hi hair and makeup like west coast Dokken/Ratt stuff, or does it also include anyone with long hair like Anthrax and Metallica?
To me Hair Metal = aquanet = SLO
get a modded SLO or stock Scary, max those mods

The HBE does it pretty well as does the Slodano in my opinion. The Slodano surprisingly has more umph in the low end. Unlike my real HR 50 that is nasal as hell. Probably because I believe the Slodano is trying to cop the SLO-100 sound. The stock XTC is not bad for 80's metal either. So many choices.

I think you mean Ratt, Dokken and such, correct?

May also wanna try different power tubes... I think EL34's or 6550's when I think 80's metal. No Marshall's used 6L6's which to me are more for fender and modded Fender (Recto) sounds. YMMV... Good luck and let us know what you find.

After trying the Judge last night for the first time- I highly recommend it for what you are doing...and if you're into modded modules, Voodoo amps Jose mods are unreal for modded Marshall/80's shred tones. Easiest to play too. (very fluid, harmonics are just jumping from the guitar)

80s hair rock/metal for me is primairlily not Rectifier, but ADA MP-1 (most agressive), hotrod Marshall and Soldano (more compressed, less grainy, thinner/tighter than Marshall).
Remark: Rectifier and Soldano seems to be technically close to each other. A boosted Rectifier is also soundwise an option to get more compression and less bass.

My guess for standard modules:
Randall Grail
Egnater MHG
Egnater EG5

Modded:
Salvation DReadplate (red mode, boost/blast on)
Salvation Salvado (de luxe)
Salvation Mash-oldano
Salvation Mash-All+

(I am not familiar with non-EU module modders.)

Got a JF Mr. Scary. Should be in my hands next week. I would like to get another module, but the number of options makes it difficult to decide. I want something with a sound not too grainy, that would give me good rhythm and lead. Would that be the XTC? I heard some clips of the XTC Snorkeler and didn't like the sound. I'm looking for more of a contemporary Neil Schon sound. The Judge sounds nice for leads, but wonder about rhythm sounds.

Call me Crazy, but live with a stock Plexi and see if that doesnt do it for you, I think you might be pleasently surpized..and at 125 used (USD)...they are a good buy.
You can always mod it later if ya want.

I love the Snorkeler, blows a stock XTC out of the water. its hard to judge these preamps without giving them a test ride...I can tell you the Judge will do the job for sure. But the folks on this forum have all played through the other stockers, I am sure you cant go wrong with a Plexi.

If you're going modified, I think the Sacred Grooves Phish would be perfect for that Ratt/Dokken/Lee Jackson/Modified Marshall tone.

It's definitely got all the attributes (High gain, strong mids and top end) and it's fast feeling, like a Marshall. Soldano's are too spongy feeling and sounding, IMHO. And the Strato channel option will give you killer cleans.

While I like the Bogner Ecstasy, it's too 90's-current to be an 80's sound. It's more modern, with much higher gain and scooped mids.

The Friedman Brown Eye would be a great option as well. I can definitely get that Guns 'N Roses tone easily and with an old TS8, I can nail Scotty Hill's tone from Skid Row. The Sacred Groove MK22 can get close to that as well but it's got less gain than the BE.

And don't forget the Salvation Stonerverb. It's got plenty of gain and clarity and depending on where you set the mids, you can definitely get the 80's tone.

Why not consider the scott Ian 1987 module? Judging from the soundclips and the recent reviews, I'd say it covers a lot ground. Friedman designed too I think.
