I finally got my studio room in order and set up to mic record the Randall with the Ultra XL. I have always just used a L6 POD XT for all my recording. I now know why all the sound clips of the randall on here sound so **** good. I stuck my mic in front and plugged it into the mic preamp and was blown away. I am amazed by the difference between direct recording and sticking a mic in front of the amp. All of a sudden the module was crunchy and crushing me. I always listened to the soundclips posted and couldnt figure out why my amp didnt sound like that. The mic does wonders!!! Now I am all set to do some serious recording. Bye Bye Line6!!!! I would post the clip of my noodling for 30 seconds but I havent open a soundclip page or anything yet.

I just opened a soundclick. I used an older carvin SM57 copy mic. I couldnt find my SM57 anywhere so I went with what I could find. I still have mics and cables and stuff in boxes somewhere. I did notice you lose quite a bit of sound quality uploading it to soundclick. The clip is basically no tweaking and not even a thought of what I was playing. So for doing nothing other than sticking a knock off mic in front of a speaker I am pretty happy. I hope this is the right link. The page confuses me.

Sounds good for using a cheap mic, What settings did you use?
Gain 1230
Bass 1230
Mid 1000
Treb 1230-100
Density 400
Presence 200
Rm100 JJ6L6
I didnt tweak at all so this really isnt even my ideal tone. It was plug and play.

I'd push the presence a bit harder but it certainly sounds great. Good job.

what kind of mic preamp did you use? the next thing im looking at is getting into recording a bit so im trying to figure out what kind of preamp i should get

I use presonus for my reocrding needs. I got the Presonus Firestudio project but thats for recording my drums too, but if your just recording guitars/ bass I'd say go for the fireobx or inspire 1394, The Hunter uses that one and he;s had excellent results.

PreSonus Blue Tube preamp into my MOTU 2408mkII. I didnt even tweak anything so this wasn't even my ideal tone. Was just real happy with the sound.

dude, track down that 57 and put it together with your Carvin- I just started using the 45 degree method and it is way cooler than a single mic

I take one 57 dead on, right on the grill...sort of start in the center but then drift off until I find a tone I like
2nd 57 is right next to it, 45 degrees

Is that Fredman style?

I use to take 2 57s straight in next to each other, that's a great sound too! These 57s can sound bad by themselves as a single without great postioning....quality pre is key too

Yep, that's it. It's great when it works, but phase can be an issue and certain phasing can sound cool too! 2 mics are always better than 1.

how loud are you running the cab when you're positioning right on the grill? is there a balance that works better between sound pressure from the cab and how hot you run your pres for the 57s?

just got a decibal meter: I was running at 85 decibals, which is like a super loud tv, but relatively quiet compare to a band practice, which is usually around 100

At 85 it won't get the cops called, unless you're in rowhome/townhome (knock on wood)...I think I could push it to 90-95, but my wife would awaken at that voulume!

Lower volumes, the 57s may not nbe the best choice- I've had better luck with ribbons and my 4047....I need that MW1, that will solve all issues!

Sometimes tone just happens.
Man that sounded great.
Active pickups? (EMGs? I wonder..)
