1st question Is it possible to get a sticky with all the tube info floating around on here? I find my self rolling through grabbing bits of info from various threads ... from biasing to placement to tone

on to my questions want to make sure i undertand..
planning on ordering a 5751 any major difference between the sovtek & jan other than 10bucks or so (tubestore.com) Was planning on oredering 1 for V1 (which is from what i understand if i am looking through my RM100M front closest to the left the 2 behind it are the loop tubes??)Is it worth swapping on the the other 2 as well with a 5751? And for the modules? I have a 1086 and a ultra that i find my self using the most will dropping one of these in them make any difference and if so where should i put it left or right?

Thanks dave

I have one in the PI (closest to tubes). In the one near the input I have a TungSol. The other is for the loop and is a JJ. Personally, I wouldn't put one in all 3. But then to me, gain is good! 5751 aren't much less than AX7s, but less ain't more!

Just my opinion.

tungsol what? I tihnk i am confisued again.. so the PI is the one near the tubes ..

Looking at back of amp

X X X X x <PI x<loop

x<VI = 5751 ??

trying to clean up some noise and open it up a ltitle ..

Everybody LOVES the JAN 5751
nobody talks about the Sovtek

Yep, JAN GE 5751s are where it's at if you're looking for quality....

As far as preamp tubes go:
In your modules:
V1 is the one on your left if you're looking from the front of the module...V2 is on the right....
Very simply put,
V1 = Tone tube
V2 = Not as important tonewise as V2 but contributes to the gain and flavoring of the module...This is where I like to put a high gain 12AX7...But it's all up to your needs...And a high gainer is silly for a clean module or such...

In your RM100 your input tube is important...Be wary of your brand choice here as V1 of your module...

Again, my opinion is:
Tung Sols are nice, full and bright - my faves...The Tung Sol ECC803S Gold pins are awesome...
JJ's are stock in MTS and tend to be darker in tone...
Sovtek is hit or miss
Electro Harmonix are good and musical...Have good gain qualities...
Rubys are usually very good for High Gain situations
Mullards suck IMHO...
NOS tubes are also hit or miss but if you want a great tube - check out the JAN Sylvania 12AX7WA for the ultimate...
And blah blah blah
Tubedepot.com is good....Dougstubes.com is also good...They're all fine...With the tube dealers above you can get many features...Matched and balanced triodes are pretty unnecessary IMHO...But a tube rated for high gain can make a great V2...Gets dirty in V1...All up to you...But if you're gonna buy 'em...Buy good ones...

Good luck!
:)

Tubes are a point of discussion around here as they are important and noticeable changes to some and very subtle for others...I think investing in good tubes is a very good idea...But that's just me...I can hear a difference with each change albeit subtle...

JAN 5751 in the PI is the way to go. For me it completely eliminated my noise problems....enough where i ended up selling my ISP. I have a Tungsol 12AX7 in the V1 which works for me pretty well. Penta 12AX7M and Ruby 12AX7HG are good for high gain modules imo. Ruby 6550C's are great power tubes.
