Anybody know the lineage? I know that currently there is an Ultra and Ultra XL, but what was the Ultra Lead? I'm guessing that the Ultra XL replaced it, but is it pretty much the same module? I'm pondering another lead tone (I currently use the XTC for that), and was wondering about the Ultra Lead or Ultra XL for that. If any of you guys have experience with both of these, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

from what I read, it's not the same at all. The XL is like an Ultra with added mids, but Lead is much smoother- enough to say it's way outside the Ultras

discontinued :x

Ultra: Lots of bass and gain, scooped mids.
Ultra XL: Tighter bass, more mids.
Ultra Lead: Mid-gain, smooth tone, very shreddy 80's tone. Different beast altogether.

Ultra lead is not the same as ultra at all. Its extremely mid-rich and is meant as a lead module. I love the lead tone from my ultralead lead over all of my other gain modules.

Only in certain cases would I use it for rythyms.

Jimosity makes it sound decent for rhythms :)

Thanks guys for the responses. I picked up a used Ultra Lead and plugged it in last night. I a/b'd against the XTC and found the Ultra Lead more to my liking for solos. It has a better defined pick attack, definitely more mids, and a more liquid tone. So far, my favorite for leads. Does anybody know if the Ultra Lead is based on any particular amp? At first I thought maybe the VHT Ultra Lead head, but after further thought, I realized that would be too literal of a naming, based on how Randall names their modules.

Is anyone else's ultra lead kinda muffled in the low end? =/ I actually found turning all my tone knobs ALL The way up (after switching down to a 2200pF cap, not a decent one though), then moving the bass down some along with teh mids, and the gain anywhere it sounds decent.

I did find this module to be a bit cloudy myself. Of the four modules I currently have in my RM-4, the Ultra Lead is the only one with the bright switch on, which seems to help. On the other hand, since I plan to use the Ultra Lead only for solos, the lack of point gives the single notes a thicker, smokier feel, which I like.

Oh well, I'm getting Pete to morph mine into a Mark Studio preamp later anyway, so it will suffice for a lead module :p:
