Im looking for a heavy rhythm tone that is saturated and heavy but doesnt sound muddy at all. A great example is a band called bullet for my valentine. There a screamo metal band but there guitar sounds are great. Im pretty sure they are using 5150s. You can listen to a couple tracks on there myspace. http://www.myspace.com/bulletformyvalentine
Please help me nail this tone. Ive got an rm100 combo with 6l6s.

Thanks
Matt

I don't know the band at all but I think the tone you are describing is the UltraXL.

....some will probably say XTC but I don't think so. I never a lot of time with one of those - owned two stock ones and never liked either...the only one I could use was Pete's modded one and even then never got along with the voicing.

Yeah I was thinking the ultra or xl but I thought the xl was more for leads and the ultra for rhythm? I might be wrong but thats what i heard. I havent actually got to play either. I was also thinking maybe the 1086? Ive heard good things about those also. Yeah i agree about the xtc. I have one and actually really dig it. If I boost it, I get some decent heavy riffs out of it and it has great lead sounds also but it doesnt get me anywhere close to what Im looking for. Thanks for the help

Matt

To me, UltraXL is definitive cutting, high gain rhythm tone...not that you couldn't play leads on it of course.

There are 3 modules with the name Ultra:

Ultra
UltraXL
Ultra Lead

Ultra/UltraXL are similar...XL is an Ultra with a tweak to the tonestack to make it more 'present' rather than 'dark' i.e. upper mids.

Ultra Lead has a very mid heavy emphasis for singing lead tones and also sounds thicker than the Ultra/XL.

Actually they are using peavey 6505's. I read a statement from peavey with Matt Tuck and he talked about how the 6506 defined his tone. So thats pretty much what im looking for. What the closest module would be to the 6505.

Bullet used Mesa's on recording their first album "The Poison", and I think now they've switched to 6505's. Either way, there could be a dozen different amps blended to get the tones. You're pretty much get into the ballpark with a Recto, Grail or Ultra XL
Cheers

I have never used the UltraXL
I have an Ultra and I think its pretty close to the clips I heard. But thats only 1/3 of the story. You can hear mine at myspace.com/georgebarrysolo on the song geddidon. I am a recording nut, so let me add that to nail it you need to record it direct or close mic'ed, compress the guitar HEAVILY, and cut the lows at about 300hz completely.
Its a great sound..but it doesnt happen so much live. But its awesome in the studio. Using a high gain tube amp like the 6505 live would be good for these guys, but so would an RM4 with an Ultra, in my opinion. The Ultra has that scooped mids thing, which is very evident here.
Overall, there is alot of ways of getting a certain sound. Are you trying to get this sound LIVE? Or in the studio? At a high volume or a low one?
These are important questions.
