Okay guys help out an MTS newb. What two modules would you recommend to start with to be able to cover basically anything until I can buy more?

Tell us more.....what kind of music do you play? Head or combo? Any particular tone(s) you just gotta have?

Well I'm looking to pick up an rm50 combo. I love playing Hendrix and ZZ top, but also enjoy drop tuning and playing metal. I basically like playing everything and I know that I am not going to get everything in two modules, I'm just looking for a good place to start. I definitely see many more mods down the road for me :D

I was looking at a JF XTC at one point because it appears to have a lot of range. I dont have experience with it though.

After watching MattFigs youtube videos I am so envious of his rig. So many modules. I can only imagine how amazing that is

The Grail is mesa dual rectifier tone, and the Plexi is a classic Marshall tone. These two modules would be a good start. The sky is the limit when it comes to mods - My JF 59RR stays in my RM 20!

Are you looking to get stock modules, or are you interested in venturing into the world of modded modules? The latter will be at least a little more expensive, but oh so worth it. If you want to try holding to stock modules, I can vouch for the Grail being one of the best ones. To me, it's early Rectifier tone with a little more of a Marshall midrange twist to it. That will cover the heavy side no problem. The SL+ is another pretty good stock module, but it has a ton of gain and if you're just starting with two, I think you'll need something a little less raging for your second module. The Tweed isn't bad. I've never played the Plexi, but some people like it.

Now, if we're talking modded modules, it's a lot easier to cover the bases. If I were only going to have two, one of them would definitely be either the SacredGroove or Jaded Faith XTC. I personally prefer the SacredGroove one and that's what I have now, but I used to have the Jaded Faith one and it's great too. The beauty of these modules is that you get a Plexi mode that can do cleaner tones pretty well, a blue channel mode for Marshally crunch, and a red channel mode for squishy high gain. Just one module really covers a lot of ground. For my second one, I might have to go with the Jaded Faith Voxless. That covers you all the way from clean up to quite crunchy indeed.

I am definitely wanting the modded modules! Your recommendation of the XTC and Voxless sounds like it might be just what I am looking for!

I'd agree with the advice above, for stock modules the SL+ and Grail are my two high gain keepers. For modded flexibility, my Jaded Faith XTC covers a ton of ground. I'm just trying to decide on which of my two cleaner modules to get modded next, the Top Boost into a Voxless or the Clean into a Texas Special.
I think the JF Texas Special/XTC combo would be the most versatile two module rig available:

Randall Clean/Fender Twin/Mesa Lonestar modes
Bogner Ecstasy Plexi/Blue/Red modes

Funny that you say that because I just made a deal to get a stock clean and ultra and since the clean can't be modded to a voxless I have decided on the texas special. So it seems we had the same idea

Cool, I find the Clean very useful as a pedal platform and one of the main attractions of the Texas Special for me is that it can still do an upgraded Clean module tone. Then you add in the Blackface Twin and Mesa Lonestar modes and it covers a lot more ground than the stocker.
I want a Voxless too, but since I've got a Vox Night Train 50 as well I think it's a little less of a priority to round out the MTS Vox tones for me.

For another stock recomendation, I suggest the 1086 or Plexi plus (same mods, different name) they were one of my favorite stockers along with Grail and SL+. It's also really versatile with two gain and voicing settings not found on other stock mods. It's really like having two good modules, low to mid gain and a great high gain.
I think it would be perfect along with a good stock clean like the Twin to get started cheap.

Or you could buy my Stock KH-1 and Jaded Faith modded KH-3 I just listed in the classifieds. :)
With the two settings for early and modern Metallica tones, the modded KH-3 covers a wide range , and sounds great. Not just for Metallica.
The Two modules will give you Mesa Mark IV clean, Modded Marshall crunch and high gain Mesa Mark IIC+ to handle everything from blues to rock to drop tuned metal.
I actually think the modded KH-3 is on of the best custom modules I have heard from Rob at Jaded Faith.

I was in a similar situation when I got my rm50c. My first 3 stock modules were a kh1, kh2' and a kh3. I send both the kh2 and the kh3 to Rob to be modded (1 as a kh23 so I can toggle between a kh2 and a kh3' the other became a mark X.). Both are awesome mods. I kept the kh1 stock, it takes pedals very well. With the above, great for getting a metal tone. The kh2 mode gives me the mid gain tone. The mark x and the kh3 mode crush.
